Being a young herper, I was always in Bonita Gala's reptile shop in Sarasota FL, priorly owned by Ben Siegel. One day an older man walked in with a very old Jack Russell, Tippy, and a clutch of hatching eggs. Bonita introduced me to Kevin 5 years ago and he proceeded to show me his "first in the world" corn snake... A hypo opal stripe. He hit the 1/64 odds with possible hets from Lee Abbot and on his first clutch produced an animal that the big breeders had been trying to for the two years prior. He was so excited, but did not feel the need to share it with the public. Snakes were never about money or fame for him, he kept, bred, and produced snakes simply because it was his passion.

As he battled his crippling disease, Bonita and Jerry Gala helped him a few times a week with his collection of around 80 colubrids and for that he was forever grateful. He brought quadruple gene animals, unrivaled knowledge, and the Hypo Florida Kings to this hobby and it repaid him with 3 more years of life. I would go visit him and you could see the spark in his eyes when he saw some of the Florida kings that I brought, or when he was looking at his eggs hatching... even if they were just hypo hondurans (I say just because he has produced hundreds). He told me so many times what he wanted to produce in the future and Bonita and Jerry helped keep his dreams alive. They were all that kept him going.

His dream was to one day produce a Whitesided Pink Pearl Snow Florida King and with the Hets that he left behind for Bonita, his dream will one day come to fruition. The morph will be named after him as his legacy will live on through the very animals that kept him fighting. He never publicly took credit for the Hypo Brooks, nor did he feel that he needed to get $700 a piece for them. He sent them out for $100-150 and that was enough for him. As long as he could keep his collection self sustaining he was happy. I can not say enough positive things about Kevin and was excited to once again bring my hatchlings over to brighten his day and to help him decipher what FL King morphs he had hatching when the time came.

Kevin Maxwell passed away around 5:30am Sunday morning. He battled Luke Eric's Disease three years longer that the doctors anticipated. He was a fighter, and his main motivation was his snakes. I spent the last two years away at college and did not have as much time to spend with him as I wish I did now, but I know he will be looking down on us all with the expectations that one day our snakes will be just as vital to us as they were to him. I think we should all take a page out of his book and refocus our outlook on this hobby. Let something positive come out of such a huge loss.

Happy Memorial Day and God Bless Kevin and our military!

Jeremy, I am sorry for your loss and my condolences go out to each and every person that has had the pleasure of meeting Kevin. Unfortunately I never had the chance to meet him but he was highly talked about here locally on his collection and love for the animals. Once again I am sorry for your and the hobbies loss.

Sorry for your loss of a friend Jeremy. Seems we all lost someone special after reading your story. Sounds like he was a "true" lover of snakes and cared more for the animals then the money. Happy Memorial Day to you and everyone else as well. Let us not forget those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedoms.

Joe

Thank you so much for posting this info about your friend.

I am so very sorry for such a loss, and I know that I would have been blessed in knowing Kevin. From the information posted, Kevin was indeed, someone who " got it ", in terms of having a passion for herps.

My sincere condolences.

I'm very sorry to hear about Kevin's passing Jeremy. I never knew him personally, but I certainly knew of his name in herpetoculture for many years. I know how this feels to loose a close friend in an un-timely manner.

That's a great idea to coin the morph in honor of his work and acheivments in the hobby...........

best regards, ~Doug

Yes, he was the fist person to pop out hypo brooks and sold the offspring to someone else who took credit for them. With Kevin it was never about the money and he proved that...

Kevin was around for a long time and he knew what he was doing. Yet he kept private from the internet. He just did what he loved and not for money or recognition from others.

It is hard to type this because when someone leaves this world it is just never the same.

God bless the people that helped him with his snakes and his daily care. And you Jeremy!

Observing them in a cage by themsleves with set temps and deciding when to feed is hardly natural or healthy for the snakes.

You are doing what suits you. which is fine, but its not about the animal, its about you. Your requirements.

It's weird to say that in a post like this. It sucks when anyone passes and My heart goes out for his family and friends. I didn't know him but have heard of him, lots of things, from many people. His line of hypos was the first produced and it's awesome he got to say he made a actual new morph. I got to see a lot of his babies along with the other line of hypos. I even got to see the first crosses of the two lines that made some sweet looking animals. You don't see them like that anymore after being outcrossed into norther locales. Most people only get to buy and use the hard work others did to make something new. He is lucky to have been able to say he did, how many can say that?
RIP Kevin !!!

That was well, written/said, Jeremy. I never met Kevin, but had heard of him, and just reading this from you brings me a little closer to knowing him. Thanks, and GOD Bless his family and loved ones left behind!

Disclaimer: I do keep several snakes in pairs, and some in groups. However I realize that things can go wrong, and I have to keep a close eye on those groups, to be sure they are not being adversely affected by these living conditions. Also if one happens to eat it's cagemate, it is 100% my fault, and I know the risks in advance!
