Colombian vs. Hog island

trex8692 May 30, 2012 12:54 AM

Does anyone have experience with both colombian and hog island boas?

I'm planning on getting one of these as my first snake.

What are the care differeences between the two? Does the colombian require a significantly larger cage? I've also read that hogs need higher humidity, but I should just be able to put a humid hide in the cage at all times right?

Temperament: which, if any, are tamer?

Size: I dont want to get small/large extremes of the animals. I was planning on either getting a female hog or a male colombian. Any preferences?

Thanks

I have both. My hog islands are puppy dog tame and about 8foot each. I keep them in the same rack(not the same cage) as my Colombians with the same temps and humidity and have not had a problem with them in the last 10 years since I have had them.
hope this helps.

Out of the two which would you say is better for a beginner snake keeper?

I was leaning towards colombian male because they are thicker and more common. I really do like the female hogs but they seem rather thin. They are also so hard to find. Is it possible to thicken them?

I want to raise a boa from baby to adult.

Thanks reptilefelon.

I think im going to try to get a female because I think the male might end up being a little too small for my personal taste.

The problem with hog islands are they are extremely hard to find as babies. Are there any breeders you can recommend?
