Under tank heater

Azooinaz Oct 04, 2003 11:14 PM

I just purchased a Spotted Python, and I am using an under tank heater for a heat source. Should I leave the heater on 24 hours, or turn it off at night?

I use a heat lamp with a basking spot of 86-90F for my spotted. I also use a "night" heat bulb so the night temps can drop into the mid-to-high 70's. The night bulbs are usually sold under the term "night-time heat bulbs" etc. and are either red or dark blue (black). Do you have any branches for your spotted to climb on? If not you should get some and orient them so that your snake can bask under the heat lamp while it rests on the branch(es). They must be large enough to support its weight. Your spotted might not use the branches right away, but eventually it will use them almost constantly. Also have at least two hides; one under the basking spot and one at the cooler end of the cage so your snake can escape the heat if it wants to.
Hope that helps!
Good luck!
