Rainbow Boa and Tree Boa Together?

shifleed Jun 04, 2012 03:07 PM

I was wondering if it would be possible and successful to house a Brazilian Rainbow Boa and an Amazon Tree Boa in the same enclosure. All thoughts, idea, and criticism welcome...within reason of course!

Also, looking for an Amazon Tree Boa! I just don't know much about the color morphs and price for each morph.

I wouldn't put those two sp. in the same cage. I wouldn't suggest putting two of the same sp. in the same cage together much less those two sp. A lot can go wrong and tree boas tend to be aggressive.

If you are interested in tree boas I would suggest contacting Shannon Craft, you can look her up on face book.

I don't see a problem with it at all. Working at a zoo we do a lot of mixed species displays with very little trouble. The two species shouldn't come into that much contact with each other since they fill such different niches. However, there are some important things to remember. Only put two animals together that have been quarantined and are ideally captive bred. Also, never feed them in the same cage always pull both of them, then mist them heavily before reintroduction. Offer both individuals numerous basking areas, hiding spots and ample room to get away from each other. There are risks but with proper forethought they should be minimal.

Thanks for the info! What possible complications could arise when housing the two together?

I feel as though these situations would not arise. I have never had a sick snake and take great care of my animals. Record keeping would not be a problem either because I would note the changes that are indicative of a shed for the individual snake and watch their activity. As far as feeding time...an extra minute or two is all it would take and that is not a problem for me. I don't mean to bash you by any means! I appreciate your input and have considered all that you have said very carefully.

It sounds like you've already made up your mind, I think you should stick with it and report back with problems, successes and pictures. I think I have heard of a lot of big time rainbow boa breeders keeping two females in a decent sized cage throughout most of the year. I do this with a lot of my big girls and have never run into a problem. I don't think keeping two different species, especially two that fill different niches, would cause any more stress or problems than two of the same species together. Of course there is more risk for failure but if you're a competent keeper you shouldn't have to worry too much about that. Just make sure the cage is large, has numerous and adequate basking and hiding spots. Don't be too shocked if you come home to find one snake eating another, not saying it's likely but it's more likely to happen than keeping them alone!
