WC Mexican Hognose

I don't frequent this forum so this may be old knowledge to many of you...
I collected a male last Oct. and brumated him mid-Nov. He refused to feed prior to brumation. Upon warm-up in late March he continued to refuse to eat any offerings though he did push a toad scented fuzzy mouse around the cage.

I was about to make a trip back to release him and on a whim last night I cut off the leg of a thawed chick and he ate it! So today I pasted some chick down on a hopper mouse and he pounded that too! I'm used to chick scenting for my large group of Boiga but this was a pleasant surprise! Like I said this may be old news to a lot of you but wanted to share it anyhow.

One of the better posts I've seen in a while...I love this type of information!

I've struggled with a VERY picky feeder...but she's finally taking Cuban Tree Frog scented fuzzies...I feel like throwing a party, it's been at least 8 months of hell.

Here's the list of things I tried:

~ F/T chick/peep leg (nope)
~ F/T and Live pinks (nope)
~ Rat pinks (nope)
~ Tuna oil (nope)
~ Southern Toad scent (2 twice)
~ Cuban Anole scent/tail (2 times, didn't kill any lizards)
~ Eastern Spadefoot scent(4 times)
~ Cuban Tree Frog Scent (8+ times)

Thanks for sharing your experience...how bout a pic of the picky eater?

Here's a pick of the Freakin Axanthic female, she better end up het Amel for all this trouble!

Thanks for the kind words! Too much of a hassle trying to edit/post pics from this iPad, I'll try from my laptop when I get home. He was collected in Eastern Az. And was the only adult I found....after driving 6 hatchlings in the hour before I saw him motoring across the road.

Hogs from this area almost appear "blond" in comparison to the ones I've seen in NM. Just glad he finally ate. I was to the point of planning a trip just to release him.

I appreciate when folks post experiences like this. There could be some great future snakes that will be saved from trying something this simple. Thanks for the info!
