I really need your help in finding the right filter

2turtlespecies Oct 05, 2003 12:55 AM

My turtles live in a 125 gallon aquarium.  I fill this up half way with water so I say I use 80 gallons of the 125.  I am therefore contacting you
because:

I found a wonderful outdoor filter for the pond I keep them in, in the summer. It is the LAUGUNA Powerflo 4500 external filter. This beautifully made filter is the best one for outdoors I ever purchased. All other filters I used (FISH MATE BIO POND FILTER, TETRA POND BIO FILTER,AND PLANTER BIOFILTER) were inadequate and caused me to do a lot of cleaning. For my 125 gallon tank I presently use two Pro Magma Filters. I put one on both sides of the tank. These are truly no good for my size turtles any more because they clog up every two days and do not really keep the water crystal clear like my pond filter the LAGUNA powerflo. I need you to let me know about a powerful indoor filter than can handle turtle feces. PLEASE CONTACT ME WITH THE NAME OF A FILTER THAT WILL NOT CLOG UP LIKE MY PRO MAGMA FILTERS do.

Thank you

I actually changed the way I think about it a little.
I know this isn't a good answer.
I have soem outside magnum filters running on my two big tanks. They take the edge off a little.
But turtles are really dirty . And I'm really anal about tanks in the house. They have to look clean if you want them where people are going to see them.
Instead I worked on different systems to make water changes easy and painless.
I made some different length hoses , and structured it in a way so when I get home from work; I just put in the siphon hose, let the whole thing drain into the floor drain. Then put in the fill hose and fill it back up. I do this about twice a week. Its just less hassle for me to drain the whole thing and fill it up with new clear water.
I gave up on trying to get all the dirt out . I used to do this when I raised large quantities of tropical fish . I came up with differnt syaytems so I could just open and close a few valves and change out as much water as I wanted.
My two big turtles ( 30 and 80 pounds) are really dirty and its just better to drain it all out.

Just another suggestion...and this might be off in the wrong direction.. I have a friend that has sliders . He removes them from the main tank to a plastic tub for feeding. He claims they will go to the bathroom almost right away after feeding.
Or at least in the first 1/2 hour. Then he just returns them to the main tank.
I have no experience with this...and I'm not sure what kind of turtles you have. This wouldn't work with my alligator snappers.
Might want to check one of the other forums.
