OT sighting

DMong Jun 09, 2012 02:45 PM

I was out on the back patio just a few minutes ago, and suddenly noticed this Black Racer (C.c.priapus)going from the grass up the base of this small tree in search of one of their favorite menu items in the Florida area,..Brown Anoles. As it was moving about in "hunt-mode" I slowly walked up to it so it didn't spook and catured a couple photos of it casually doing it's thing. Right about as I was getting just a tad closer, it noticed me and froze, so I took the shots in case it bolted off as they are very known for doing..

I've seen a fair number on this barrier Island in the past, along with a VERY unique looking DOR cornsnake as I walked my little dog very late one night. It was really sad to see because apparently it was killed not long before I saw it on the curb where ants were beginning to gather heavily on it.

The Racer isn't anything to write home about, but as many of us know, any wild snake is nice to see...

That is cool. So, you must be surrounded by natural habitat. You found a dead Corn, what about kings?

Pretty neat Doug. Always nice to find snakes around the house too!!! Did you snap a photo of the corn by any chance? I just got back from your home state but did not get to herp. I was to help out my mother.

Yeah, it is nice to see any kind anywhere for sure.

Yes, I do have a photo of the DOR corn I found that night. Also another corn from the mainland side I found that Jorge owns now, yellow rats, more Black Racers and other stuff too. I was trying to post in reply to Ross about it earlier and my photobucket was so loaded it froze up while making the post and I had to re-boot everything. Maybe I can get it done successfully here in a bit, Joe.

Thanks Dave!,....my pleasure. Yes, it's always fun to see snakes no matter what kind they are. I sure wouldn't have minded seeing a nice floridana or Scarlet king though..LOL!

It looked like he was intentionally posing for you in that first photo. Great shot.

Thanks Randy!....yeah, the position it froze in when it saw me slowly getting closer was really nice to get a shot of. I couldn't see my camera screen at ALL in the bright sunlight, so I just pointed it and hoped for the best. When I uploaded it to the computer I was very pleased with the way it turned out...
