New Corn snake

Machinegun Oct 05, 2003 01:31 AM

I just purchased a corn snake today from Hardy Reptiles, this is my first snake and I have several questions.

1. How soon should I attempt feeding the snake giving it time to settle in to it's new home?

2. I am using newspaper as a substrate in a 5 gallon terrarium 16"L x 8 1/4"D x 11"T with a ZooMed 1 to 5 gallon under the tank heater. How many layers or sheets on newspaper should I use?

3. The snake is about 12 to 14 inches in lenght. How long can I keep this snake in the above mention terrarium?

Thanks

New corn snake owner.

Like every other issue there are many opinions on this question.
Some say a week, some say a few days some say it doesn't matter.
I personaly like to wait a couple of days but I have had a couple of hatchlings arrive on feeding day so I gave them a try.
They ate.. so it may not be a matter of time as much as the personality of the snake.
So, why did I ramble about all of that? I don't know, because as a general rule I would suggest waiting a couple of days....lol

I don't use newspaper for my snakes but I do for my babie beardies and we use two layers. Don't really have any reason for it it just seems better. The top layer catches any waste and the bottom layer prevents the bottom of the tank from getting soiled...I don't know sounds good to me

It can stay in that container for quite a while. Probably 5 or six months. It is hard to pinpoint an exact time line because each snake grows at a different pace. Just let it's size be your guid. You will know when he starts getting too big for the 5 gallon tank.

so, congrats and good luck
