Newbie's Perspective

KingDome Jun 12, 2012 10:18 PM

Oh my word, where do I start.

Please read all this post before you retaliate.

I got my kings about two years ago or so. I still like it a lot, taking care of my snakes and learning about the trade. but it was way more fun and exciting at first because I felt like I was apart of something and could come here and connect with the best in the trade. That's just not the case anymore.

There are experts, professionals, in any trade, craft, art, anything. But none of those professionals act like this.

I realize a lot of y'all have known each other for a long time, even met in person. Yes, y'all may have a lot of experience and knowledge, but people that come here for the first time don't know that. Y'all come across to those people as a bunch of 12 year olds with bad attitudes.

Y'all should have more respect for your own profession. Not degrading it over and over again.

I just don't get it!!! This is Kingsnake.com This should be the place to come for everything anyone needs to know about king snakes. This is viewed by all kinds of people all over the world.

Y'all should be embarrassed and ashamed for the way y'all act. Come on people, act like the professionals you think you are.

I actually agree with this and I will try to be more considerate for newbies.........but I don't think this applies to just a couple of us but rather alot of us.....

Thank you. I know we can not control everyones attitude problem. For some people, there intentions are not in the best interest of the forum. Some of it is an ego problem instead of attitude. I have been guilty of it in the past also. It is an easy web to get caught up in sometimes.

Hi Davy, I agree with you, but its not that simple.

THe problem is, there are all levels of experience and interest. From basic beginers to advanced, to advanced in many areas, not just this area of herp keeping. People with biology backgrounds, field work backgrounds, etc etc and way more etc. .

I believe we are products of our own system of education. Only here we do not follow that system.

In those other areas, there is normally a system of learning. Like school. You start in pre-school, then work up step by step to higher education.

You do not have pre-schoolers in class with Post grad students.

You also do not have post grad advisors working with 1st graders. Or even 2nd graders taking high school courses. ITs can occur, but is so extremely rare. The reason is does not occur is a newbie, preschooler cannot understand the gap in education or experience. There is too much space or difference their their learning, ability to learn and experience.

In industry, you can take apprenticeship, then move up from there.

You did bring up something special. You said you come here to be part of a comunity of keepers like you. AGain, this is the problem, these forums are not set up that way, but most likely they should be.

All of us have our own unique interest in why we put animals in cages, and that is reflected in how we rationalize doing so. Its not about right or wrong, its simply what we are individuals.

In this case, KINGSNAKE has divided up forums on different kinds of kingsnakes, which was always odd to me. In my opinion there is not enough activity on each seperate forum to warrant doing that. I would think its far more benefitual to divide up the kingsnake forum in, experience levels and type of interest in the subject. So folks like you can find your niche (a small semi-enclosed space).

AS it is, the guidelines are clear, "the keeping and breeding of kingsnakes in captivity" I think it mentions something about conservation as well. To be accurate, I have not read it in a while, so it may have changed.

Without going on an on, which I do, this forum is not built to fit the particular expeirence levels and type of interest that would lead to forming the type of comunity your talking about. Its more about throwing all manner of folks in a pot and watching them boil. I am not sure what folks expect when they throw folks from what I mentioned above together. You always going to get newbies not understanding those with more expeirence. That is normal human behavior.

I would recomend, picking the subjects your interested in, following those folks that interest you, and not worrying about the rest.

I am thinking thats what Cindy(our wonderful moderator)(I am kissing hind end now) just told us.

She said, act like grownups and not like children. I think kids are much better at picking their friends and ignoring the rest. So I say, we need to act like kids, Pick what and who interests you. They are here. Good luck

You are the one I goofed on about the pinworm post and snake mitts...again apologies!

I agree about the juvenile behaviour. This forum should foremost be a source of useful information for all, not a cafeteria food fight venue.

Apology accepted. That was probably partially my fault also.

I have just recently taken a class on E-mail etiquette. Email and these types of communication are more and more prevalent. UNFORTUNATELY, a lot of miss communication and miss understandings comes along with this. Due to the fact that you can not see the facial expressions and hear the ton of voice. Which is big part of Influence-able Communication when talking face to face.

Personally I am just tired of filtering through the bull crap to get to the stuff I want to read. It's becoming a waste of time for me.

I've been a casual poster for years under the 724hp name (lost access to old email) and have learned a lot from this and the milk forum, but some of the posters have become pretty ridiculous the past few weeks.

I'm here to learn more about my hobby/passion, and see awesome pictures... not be bombarded with a bunch on nonsense.

I dont understand all the problems people have with BR and FR... so what if they think outside the box... so what if they do something you don't completely agree with or understand... and so what if the explinations they give arent good enough in your eyes. If you don't like it, move along and allow the people who want to learn something do it rather than have to read through a bunch of arguments.

The forum needs to be positive and educational. calling out people with decades of experience with 1000s of snakes really doesnt make much sense in the eyes of a person that wants to learn everything they possibly can about these animals.

KingDome Jun 13, 2012 10:35 AM

I totally agree, Could not have said it better my self.

I don't have a problem with someone giving there Ideas on how to do something. And, don't have a problem with someone else disagreeing with that Idea and giving there own Idea. That is how I learn !! But Don't argue about who is right or wrong. Us newbie's are not stupid. We might even come up with a better way to do something. Never know. LOL

Unfortunately it appears many times that there is a different agenda behind posts here on this forum.

Funny thing is the arguements don't really stem from who is right or wrong. The problems come from the way, some people word their posts. I for one don't like being talked down to, and I try to return respect to others, untill they loose all my respect. At that point it's all crap, and going no where.

Disclaimer: I do keep several snakes in pairs, and some in groups. However I realize that things can go wrong, and I have to keep a close eye on those groups, to be sure they are not being adversely affected by these living conditions. Also if one happens to eat it's cagemate, it is 100% my fault, and I know the risks in advance!

Agreed... I will use this site for informational purposes only from here on out. Its sad to see a bunch of grown men act so childish. I used to think of this as a cool place where I can associate with others who share my passion. When I read these posts I get sick. Grouping kings is nothing new... there should be no arguements there. One of the most famous kingsnake breeders in the world has been doing that for years. You may of heard of him. His first name is Bob and his last name has the word apple in it. Funny I don't hear anyone here bashing that guy! If you want to argue about old news you should set up an email handle between the parties involved in that rediculous excuse for a public arguement. If u don't have something usefully to add why are you saying it?
I have made some recent posts here with genuine problems seeking advice. These posts seemed go be ignored due to an ongoing arguement.
If these situations are not resolved by those who run this site I will most likely find somewhere else to share my passion for reptiles

This is why I stopped posting here. This used to be a place where you could share your newest acquisition, breeding project, hatchlings, and help newer hobbyist and learn from others. But more and more it became a forum to boost ones ego at the expense of others to the point it seemed every other post became a pissing contest.

Even debates WERE thought out and respectful of one another. I've stopped reading threads on this debate long ago because of the disrespectful and childish posts in them. It's become less a learning experience and more a bunch of kids fighting over the same ball.
