Stupid, stupid mistakes...

gerryg Jun 15, 2012 06:28 PM

I will say no more beyond pointing out the link below came in very handy and I am damn lucky my female poly isn't dead.

I lied... I will say more. The plastic plants I bought to dress up the enclosures came with suction cups to keep them in place but those suction cups don't hold up under the weight of an 18 month old snake... so I used a 4" or so length of duct tape to hold them up.

When I came home today the female poly had apparently been cruising about the enclosure as is her want and while crawling through a plant the duct tape failed under her weight...

Long story short... when I came home her head was totally encased in the duct tape! If I had gone about intentionally trying to seal her head in the tape I could not have done a better job than she had managed on her own.

After nearly an hour of very painstakingly slow pulling the tape is off and thankfully no harm seems to have been done

Stupid, stupid, stupid is the chant reverberating through my head... hopefully it will fade away.

Boys and girls... do not ever think using duct tape inside a snake enclosure is a good idea... trust me, it is not!

I truely respect and appreciate your being willing to share your mistake. Most are not willing to admit and share that kind of thing. Your being willing to helps us all better care for and keep our snakes safer in the future.
Thanks!!!

Gerry,

Bro, do not keep harping on yourself. We all do things my friend that later, we find out, are not the best things to have done. Everyone makes mistakes, and everyone, if humble, learns from them. It is all part of life.

I am ecstatic to hear that your little snake made it thru ok, and THAT is what should be focused on.

Thanks for sharing!

Damn Gerry, glad to hear the critter is okay. Yeah, we ALL do "not so smart" things every now and then. I bet veggie oil would probably get that stuff off pretty easily. At least thats what you are supposed to use when critters are caught on sticky boards. Lord knows I have done some REALLY dumb stuff over the years.

OMG how stupid! lol jk

I did that too years ago. Seems that if you put duct tape inside a cage, the snake will somehow not only find it but get stuck, like you said, better than you trying to get it stuck.

Will be fine, scales grow back after a few sheds. Just be glad you didn't use Gorilla tape, lol.
