1st clutch FINALLY down

SteveinIL Jun 16, 2012 01:54 AM

FInally a good reason to be late to work. THis girl had her pre lay shed on may 4th and laid this morning. 7 healthy eggs 1 dud. The pairing was Firefly ph pied x Normal. Thank you again Dan Wolfe for this amazing Firefly stud. I think he may have sired 2-4 more clutches before this season is over. Here are the pics. Any tips to try to ensure high hatch rate will be accepted. think I've got the basics but never bad to double check.

Congrats, that is such an incredible sight when you open the cage and see the female on eggs for the first time. Best of luck on getting a bunch of good babies out of those eggs.

it really is. Thank you. With luck I'll have 3-6 more clutches down by the time those hatch. I'm trying to go for a big 1st season.

Good job Steve! Temps are right on for a 60 day or so hatch. I personally use perlite and water with the egg crate on top and incubate at 88.5 deg F. Mine hatch about day 55 consistently.

Congrats again!

Thank you Alan. the interesting part will be trying to get temps right when I have multiple clutches in that bator which according to my calculations, I'm due for 1 more now and another in the next week and hopefully a 4th around the 4th. is it better to err on the cooler side 85-87 or 89-91? I know I won't be able to keep all 4 at 88.

I don't know how you have your incubator set up. I have no problem maintaining temps with in 1 deg from top to bottom in my converted refrigerators. The eggs will hatch by incubating in the mid 80s to 90. I would not incubate higher than 90. Also, large changes in temps during incubation can cause problems in the hatchlings. Good luck!
