What is the real problem with mixing dendrobates?

wcumagic Oct 05, 2003 09:40 AM

I've heard several people on here mentioning that mixing is bad no matter what, and then others that say its ok to a certain extent.

My question is, could I mix leucomelas, tinctorius, and azureus (1 or 2 pairs of each) in a 150 gallon tank with lots of vertical crawling space and floor space?

I honestly dont see what a problem that could arise could be unless some bullied the others. Would these three get along in a large tank?

Sorry if it's a stupid question, but this issue seems without a definitive answer, or at least I cannot gather one.

Matt

The main problem with this is hybridation. Your frogs could intyerbreed and you would end up with crosses of those 3 frogs. Most of us would agree that this is just wrong and should not be allowed to happen. You can safely mix a species/morph of Dendrobates with a species of Phyllobates and not have to worry about them crossbreeding.

Hybrids, crosses, competition, introduction of disease .... Search the frognet archives and you'll literally find volumes of posts (pro and con) on this subject. The debates get pretty heated but overall I'd say that most of say no to mixing. Especially for a beginner.

Also, i find that set-ups with mixed species of frogs seem very unatural and the risk of hybridization wiil be high. Also if you were to do this set-up, the tincs and the azureus are both pretty aggressive frogs.
just my two cents worth.

If you have that big of a tank, why not break it into 3 sections with 2 pieces of glass and then you could have 3 different species in one tank, that could not get to each other. Unless you have the real deep 150gal type.

Ah, I know what size you are talking about. Thought it might be a long 150gal. The one you have might be tough to break up. I'v heard some people say you can mix azureus and say imitators or something that likes to stay high.

Ok I have a question, and I hope someone can give me a clear answer without bias.

What exactly is the problem with hybridizing? Is it unhealthy for the frogs? Is it a moral issue about keeping bloodlines pure?

I really want to know. Thanks
