The Great Escape of 212

rainbowsrus Jun 20, 2012 11:52 AM

Went into the BRB room this morning to do my rounds, check for sheds and see what cages will need cleaning etc. and first thing to meet my eye was a wide open cage door!!

Uh Oh, I was cleaning yesterday and must have not locked the door. Of course it's breeding season and that cage is connected with the left hand one for a breeding trio. Quick check of the left side cage showed both females present and accounted for. Looks like the male was soooo done with them he decided to go on the hunt for more females.

Looking around the room I noticed several items knocked off the top of the adjacent cage stack. Was thinking this could be very difficult to find him. Continuing my cursory examination of the room and found more or less in the opposite corner of the room a tub pushed out of the rack.

And really good news is that's one of the breeder male tubs and was already empty. Not one escapee setting free another!! Gave the tub a little push and immediately met with resistance. Clearly something in the way.

Glad I have a decent length snake hook, made it very easy to pull Ozzy from his new found hiding place and return him to his assigned cage.

All in all, about a 20 minute exercise with a great outcome.

The collection is mainly housed based on size and what an individual is doing at the time. The larger breeder females will be in cages for breeding or in the largest tubs if getting the year off. Males and smaller females get the largest tub available based on individual size.

The business cards are markers used during the feeding process. In this case those are ones that refused a f/t and will get a live one tonight. Just a way to keep track of who ate what mid process without having to refer back to each individual card.

Yeah, they are great but fragile at the same time. I repair the broken end with epoxy combined with model plane filler. Also use a piece of tape inside to make a smooth surface. Then drill a hole for the knob in the other end.

The real problem is the plastic company that made the drawers no longer makes them. Lost the molds in some move.

I remember reading somewhere there is a close enough replacement available but not cheap.

Dave,

Ha Ha, that's funny. It happens to the best of us. I think it would have been awesome if Ozzy escaped and then set others free. It's like jail break.

Glad you managed to track him down so easily...no doubt with my luck if that'd been me he'd have crawled behind several occupied cages and I'd be hunting a handful of animals instead of just one!

Really like the wooden display type cages you have, very nice looking...if you're keeping up to a trio of animals in there at a time for breeding, I'm just wondering how big the floorspace actually is inside the cage for the animals? I haven't figured out just how exactly I'm going to build some new ones yet, but I do know in the next couple of years I'm going to need more cages and I want them something that displays the animals, not just racks.

Thanks Charlie, all in all I got very lucky.

The individual sections in the display cages are 2' x 2' x 19"

IMO a little small but with the arrangement of the hide box and water bowl it's a very efficient use of the space. Plus for most of the time each section is for one snake. Only during breeding season are the males added in. For a trio I link two cages together.

They look really nice, and even if they are a little on the small side, I wouldn't knock anything that's obviously working well for someone!

Do you have a large divider that separates the two sides and comes out, or just a smaller doorway that you can open to allow the animals access from one side to the other?

thanks!

There is a 4" PVC pipe connecting the cages, also other pones on the outside connecting vertically but I never use those any more. They are white and you can see them in the picture of the cages.
