Egg laying question

ohernz Jun 22, 2012 06:45 PM

I have a pregnant pastel. A couple of days ago I was cleaning the cages and found an infertile egg in her cage. Apparently she had laid the dud overnight. She still hasn't laid any more eggs. She still looks "pregnant" but she is not behaving like she is in any kind of discomfort. Should I worry? Should I take her to a vet?

Disturbing a female when she is laying or ready to lay will cause her to hold on to the eggs longer. Do not disturb her by cleaning or handling. If she is left undisturbed for a few days she should lay whatever is remaining. Best of luck to you.

Good advice about leaving her alone and letting her feel secure. I had one do the same thing this year and it took a week for her to lay the rest of the clutch.

No offense intended here just understand that you cleaned her cage when she was ready to lay and it may take a week or 2 for her to feel comfortable to drop anything remaining. If you see her lay, I recommend waiting a day before removing the clutch to ensure she lays everything. Good luck.

Thank you! Is this a common occurrence?

Given the circumstances that happened in your case I would have to say yes as I have made the same mistake.

How long should I wait before I take her to a vet? would a shot of oxytocin help?

If you can't wait and feel it is an emergency then by all means take her to a reptile vet. Xrays and or ultrasound will be in order plus or minus injections and surgical procedures.
