another deformed hatchling; pictures

varanid Jun 22, 2012 10:31 PM

This one made it out of the egg himself. Can move, tongue flick, etc. Eyes are present (can't tell in pictures).

Should I just euthanize or see how he goes, and does this look like the sort of thing temp spikes cause?

I'd euthanize it personally.
Looks like a temp and/or moisture problem......
Was there mold on the egg?
How was the air exchange or air flow?

Many variables to pin down just one....

he prolapsed so I just fed him to my cribo.

I suspect temp more than moisture; this is the first season incubating in my new building and I hadn't realized how damn warm it could get even in coolish weather. Not super warm--low 90s--but enough that I've had a lot of problems with my clutches this year.

Yeah....low 90s isn't good for long durations..........IMHO.....I'm sure wild eggs reach those temps for brief periods of time...but they also cool down more than in our snake rooms or incubators....

Did the eggs hatch rather quickly......shorter than 60 days?

No, they took for-frigging-ever. Laid April 3rd, didn't hatch till yesterday.

Weird..... I've had leonis eggs hatch in as little as 49 days with temps around 82 to 85 but they were tiny and very stubborn feeders.......

78 to 80 seems to work well fir all my colubrids......

Geography is a variable here too......barometric pressure, humidity, elevation, etc.......

Those that use little to no water in the incubation substrate have had success.......but the ones I know that have done this live in a rather humid geographical location.......

I'd still use water in your incubation substrate since you live up in a low humidity area........

Low 90s is WAY too warm to incubate eggs, IMO.

I would hatch out eggs around 80-82, with a nighttime drop as well.

As far as the moisture aspect, I have known of good results that others have had with a decent amount of moisture, and then, way less moisture as well. All up to you. I was barely using any water in my vermiculite and had awesome results, but I know of others that used more than me and had awesome results as well.

I think the temp factor may be the overall theme here. Incubate them cooler, IMO.

I wasn't trying for low 90s. The building's system is one of those you have to set to heat or cool, and I'd left it on heat overnight (cold snap, close to freezing) then we had a warm up over the course of the day that got to upper 80s. Building got warmer than 80s--metal building. My incubator doesn't cool.

So I'm moving the incubator back inside.

I incubate at 77 to 81.5 F. I live in an area that can have summer heat waves, so in the afternoon when it looks to be getting close to the max temperature I put a frozen gel pack in the incubator for the thermostat to work with, and keep the temps in the right range. Like I said in the other thread, the only time I had a temperature problem last year was when I was not home in time to put the gel pack in. But the temps only got to 84. 90 seems deadly. Since you can put the incubator back in the house, by all means do so.

From that second pic looks like it was trying to form two heads.
Too bad. But it was a pretty severe malformation. Hope theres no more.

Nope, no more. 17 fertile eggs, but only got 13 hatchlings (including that one I euthanized). Heat spikes, etc. Sucks but next year should be better.

I had one like that last year too....

How's the other ones look, did they shed yet?
-----

varanid Jun 26, 2012 10:34 PM

one of them shed tonight, I'm going to do photos after they've all shed. Hopefully the next 2-3 days.

I'm most bummed about my DH albino/whitesided clutch. Only one egg made it past 2 weeks Actually there's one that might have, but I'm not sure...but the definitely good one is splitting tonight :D
