Still Wont take Scented...

trevid Jun 24, 2012 12:58 AM

They were pre washed, left in small deli cup with 2 freshly caught lizards and then thoroughly rubbed up before attempting to feed. Do any of you find that its easier or harder to switch over a snake that has always been on lizard diet? she was born last september, is growing nicely, but it would be nice to get her inline. finding lizards for her has been no prob as i keep 2 to 5 going in a terrarium, but any scenting tips appreciated...Dave.

Have you tried just a piece of the lizard then a scented live pink afterwards?

Also....I've found it easier to feed lizards then to switch them to pinks by scenting with their lizard of choice........some times it has to get gory....like dipping the pinky into the open abdomen of the lizard.....making lizard purée and dipping the pink in it........using pieces of the lizard skin plastered to the pinky's head......

I've had good luck attaching pieces of lizard shed or small crushed pieces from the lizards tail to the body of a soap washed pinkie.

Try rolling a washed pinky in lizard poop. I know it sounds stupid, but it often works. You may have to keep some lizards in captivity to do this, but it may very well be worth it.

hi Mark. Its prob on my end, but cant find any message. Im thinking the gist might be that this may have to get a little messy to get her to switch over, but if you want to reach me, im at dwise63@comcast.net thanks, dave.

Dave, one of my alternas that I have left from last August would not even go for fence lizards (thanks BTW.) I maintain a colony of deer mice for my rubber boas, and that little alterna went for deer mouse pinkies. So now it is eating domestic mice scented with deer mouse! Try that if you have access to some. You might also have success with scenting with deer mouse nesting material if you can't actually find the mice themselves.

a dead pinky with a lizard tail pushed deep into it's mouth. It works very often, then after several meals, the snake should take the scented pink.

Disclaimer: I do keep several snakes in pairs, and some in groups. However I realize that things can go wrong, and I have to keep a close eye on those groups, to be sure they are not being adversely affected by these living conditions. Also if one happens to eat it's cagemate, it is 100% my fault, and I know the risks in advance!
