More Cal. King hatchings

Denbar Jun 26, 2012 06:24 PM

I have 2 more clutches out now. Black and white babies from my Spotted female and 50/50 male. Only got 3, one banded and two sort of abberant striped.

Babies from my Lavendar female and Reverse spotted male. Six from this group, 3 thin banded, 3 abberant.

Thanks, Dennis

Dennis, that last one is what we call a Scrambled banded Newport. They are an aberrant form of Newport that pops out randomly in Los Angeles County. Only few have the amount of scrambled banding yours does. Most of them have a lot more striping to them. In the wild, that would be a pretty rare find, and they don't seem to be common in captivity either. My male Scrambled banded normally produces typical striped Newports, but did produce a nice scrambled banded one time and another that was slightly scrambled banded. Very cool. It goes to show what kind of genes are in the reverse spotted.

I'm surprised your aberrants from the 50/50 and dotted came out looking like that. That means the dotted has a mixture of the San Diego striped gene and Newport gene. I think one of them qualifies as an Aztec. Very interesting outcome! They look really nice.

Thanks Ross. Too bad I didn't get a group pic of that last batch but all 3 of those scrambled ones look similar. I hope I have a male in there I can hold back to breed to the Mom down the road.

That 2nd pic is my favorite. LOVE the black and whites...You say you only got three of those first ones, was it just a 3 egg clutch or were there some slugs? Dave.

She actually laid 7 eggs, but the last 4 were laid a couple of days later and spoiled quickly.

Nice Dennis! I really like the aberrant ones. That thin banded is cool too.

Thanks. There is something about those thin bands that I kind of like too.

Disclaimer: I do keep several snakes in pairs, and some in groups. However I realize that things can go wrong, and I have to keep a close eye on those groups, to be sure they are not being adversely affected by these living conditions. Also if one happens to eat it's cagemate, it is 100% my fault, and I know the risks in advance!
