New member and question

I don't have any geckos yet, but I am looking to get a couple sometime in the near future. Someone gave me one of those cages that pet stores sell as 'arboreal reptile' cages. It has a wooden frame and bottom with 1/2 in. harware cloth sides and top. It also has a shelf for a food dish to fit into. Would any gecko be suitable for such an enclosure? I was planning on filling it with manzanita and vines and such. It is about 2 1/2'tall with 18" sides.

Lots of geckos are suitable for the cage. Id say more of an arboreal species, than terrestrial. Day geckos are great beginners, and are active during the day (hence the name), and most dont get very large (4-5 inches). House geckos, crested geckos (Rhacodactylus), leaf tail geckos (Uroplatus), Golden gecko, white stripe gecko, flying geckos, etc are other arboreals. You have lots of choices available, but you should find one that suits you best.

Fill the bottom substrate with eco-earth, soil, paper towels, etc, and add lots of plants and wood for security. Feed crickets, mealworms, waxworms (not too much), silkworms, baby food (for some species), and mist daily for the ones which require high humidity. Be sure to research before you do anything though.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the information. I think I have decided on a banana gecko, gehyra baliola. I couldn't find a whole lot of information on them, but it appears that their care is the same as a crested. They are interesting looking, and seem pretty hardy. Does anyone know about this species?

If i remember corectly (someone correct me if im wrong), than they have the same care as Vorax.

These guys get big (i mean BIG). Use THICK and BIG leaves and use big branches and bamboo pieces to pearch on. Id use UV lighting and feed a 50/50 diet of babyfood (banana preferred), and crickets, and dust food occasionally. Keep the temps cool.

I dont have experience with Gehyra, but maybe someone else on this forum does.

hope this helps

Since I was given the cage, I really want something that will do well in that size. Will the banana gecko do well in that?

Well, its a 50g tank. Should be enough for an adult. But keep in mind bigger is always better (with adults).
