Going on vacation..heating questions wh

yankeeslover Jun 28, 2012 03:35 PM

please dont blast me with this question...not sure what to do about my young ball python. im leaving for a 9 night vacation this coming august. right now i have the ball in a 26QT sterlite and im running two UTH both on dimmers.. i finally have the temps perfect.. my issue or problem is that i have noticed that the temps in the tub have alot to do with my room temperture.. meaning, if its colder in my room i turn up the dimmer a bit, or if its a hot muggy day then i have to turn down the dimmer because it gets too hot in his enclosure. what should I do on vacation? August in upstate NY can be 90 degrees one day and 65 degrees the next day. i hate to keep the dimmer up because if it gets too hot in room then the tank my get upwards of 100 degrees, but if i keep the dimmer down and it gets cool outside then the tub might dip to the low 70’s. i know its not gonna be perfect week, but short term what is better for the snake? one week of maybe lower temps or one week of higher temps? im thinking lower temps because i dont think the tub will drop below 70... please help, thanks..

I recommend a thermostat instead of a dimmer. It will solve your issues.

You can get them at some pet stores. Online you can find a Herpstat, Helix, Johnson Controls etc... From many places. The Bean Farm is one place....Spyder Robotics is another....

The thermostat has a sensor that you attach to your heat pad. You plug the heat pad into the thermostat. You plug the thermostat into a powerstripe that plugs to the wall. You set the thermostat to your desired temp.

the only fast way to keep the snake constant is to put it in a room that does not vary in temp....(cellar)...

but the best is like said...get a thermostat....

(let someone keep it for you works too)

Hi,

I'm also from upstate NY and I hear you about our summer temp variation. What I do is simply turn the heating device off while I'm away. I just make sure all of my animals have empty stomachs and clean water, then I cut the power to my building before I leave. As long as they don't have food in their stomachs, ball pythons can easily handle temps in the 60s for acouple of weeks without ill effects.

You could of course buy a thermostat...but those fail too, and the consequences could be much worse. Good luck.
