Hey DC...

YOu seem pretty popular this morning! LOL
I have a question about baby bluestars. A friend of a friend has a baby collared bought from Petsmart. It is not colored like a baby aquaflame, it is mostly shades of gray and beige. I am pretty sure it is a male (not vent spots and enlarged posterior vent scales. It was sold as a CB C. collaris and is still quite young. Could it possibly be a bluestar or just an unusually colored juvie?

....you have to post a picture of it LOL. I am pretty good at guessing wrong, so that can help you eliminate what it isn't LOL.

He was labeled as a C. collaris too. Here's what he looked like as a baby.

& here's what he looks like now.

I love Squig, a very handsome boy! When he was young were his "bands" on his back very pronounced? This little guy is very monochromatic and he has NO juvie orange. The guy who has him wants to get rid of the little guy, he has geckos and didn't realize that collareds are higher maintenance with temps, etc. I was thinking about taking him, but I already have one aqauflame male.

My boyfriend says I am just looking for an excuse to get another collared! Does he know me or what?

but I would like to respond anyway to your question, Laura. While it is always possible that your friend's collared originated from "bluestar" stock, that really shouldn't matter so long as your friend finds the lizard appealing, and it is captive bred. Keep in mind that "bluestar" and "aquaflame" are just trade names for selected populations of C. collaris being bred in captivity. Although a number of folks have produced some very attractive collared lizards that go by such names, the mere presence of a fancy moniker alone should not, in my opinion, be of primary consideration when selecting a particular lizard as one's next pet. In this case, a picture really is worth a thousand words...

I agree Brock, that the color or name of a collared doesn't make the lizard. The baby has such interesting color, I have always seen aquaflame or similarly colored babies, I thought maybe it could be a bluestar because of the monochromatic hues. the guy who owns it isn't very fond of the little guy, no matter the color, I was jsut curious!

even though I love the yellows and make a big thing over them, if a guy needs a home, I will do my best in giving him one. So If he does need a home, and you can't at this time due to confined space where you are, let me know, I'll pay shipping if the dude wants to get rid of him that bad. Eve

...of my three bluestar males, two of them were almost totally silver/white when juvies....they got names like "Ghost" and "Cloud". Cloud has been slow to color up, he is about a year old now and he is finally showing some blues, he looks very similar to Squig. Ghost is....different. He has a different sort of head, the longer snout you might expect to see on a yellowhead or even one of the insularis type species. He went through several color changes, at one point becoming a VERY intense teal color with very vivid orange/red bands, and later changing to an eerie pastel aqua color. NOW he has remained a pretty standard bluestar blue, so that's what he gets called LOL. My third bluestar male, "Hamlet", colored up early to a distinct tourquoise and gets a nice deep blue now when fully warmed up. All of them were basically black and white when very young. None of them ever had a trace of yellow contamination LOL.
