aged water

regius Oct 05, 2003 12:36 PM

how long must i age tap water before i can use it for tadpoles. i found some tadpoles in my backyard but, they were not in water so i put them in a rubbermaid w/water from my turtle tank.i know, this was probably not a good idea but, they all survived so far. don't know what type they are. will be fun to see when they grow out.

I would suggest using start-right or another de-chlorinizer on the water and aging it for twenty four hours. I am assuming that you have town water with chlorine or other chemicals in it. If you have well water you should be fine. another alternative would be to get some bottled water. i know this sounds strange, but my green tree frog has a definite preference for Dasani and does not like it when I use Aquafina.

I agree with your GTF, I prefer Dasani. I understand it has sodium added to enhance the flavor, which would explain why I like it. You might want to make sure it's ok for your GTF.

Personally I'd pick up some AmQuel. You can get it at any fish place or even WalMart. I grabbed a couple 1 gallon bottles from the water section at the grocery store (they didn't even charge me for them) and I fill it with tap water and add the AmQuel. I usually age it about 24 hours. You can also put out a bucket and collect rain water.

I would avoid bottled drinking water simply because of the added sodium which can dehydrate your froggies.

in theory, the sodium would help because it would make the water closer to the water in his skin cells. soft water with very few dissolved minerals can be hard on aquatic animals because they can't regulate their osmotic pressure. In fact, Start-Right includes a certain amount of salts in it to "harden" the water and make it more livable for fish and other aquatic organisms.

...some other brands will sometimes do. Dasani I can't stand, though.

I'm a Crystal Springs person myself. Everything else seems to leave a strange taste in my mouth or it feels "oily"

When we first started with Frogs I treated bottled water and they didn't seem to soak as much as they do now with treated and aged tap water.
