Question about breeding...

chimbakka Oct 05, 2003 01:06 PM

Orion has been gravid for 18 days, and today she was at the bottom. So, I put the dirt/sand in for her. Hopefully she'll lay...
My question is, is there anything I should be worried about for her laying after only 18 days? I thought they usually were gravid for a month or so... or does it vary quite a bit? She hasn't eaten much, so I'm worried about her and the eggs. Is there anything I can do afterwards to make sure the eggs are ok if they are laid today/tomorrow? I don't know if she's even going to lay for sure yet, but I wanted to ask to give me time to think about any advice you guys have. Thanks!
~Lindsay
PS I can't believe how much I'm worried about her! If it's this bad with Orion, I'm never having kids myself! lol

my female veiled laid on day 19, and all the eggs are fine. she will need plenty of water, food, and calcium after she lays. there is a liquid calcium that you can get, contact your vet.

Thanks, that makes me feel better! I have the liquid, that's what I've been using, b/c she's only been eating supermealworms

My female veiled laid on day 20. But mine don't seem to like the sand or, I use potting soil, put into their cage. I put the female in a garbage can with like 10 inches of moist potting soil and pack it down a little bit. You can't bother them either cause they get pretty paraniod. If you want, I can E-mail you a longer explanation of this that I have saved on my computer (cause I explain this alot). Have you been weighing her? My veiled went from 112 grams down to 60 grams after laying.... Half her weight, and that was 43 eggs. Quite a jump. Good luck let me know if U need help.

My female will not lay unless she had a hole started and the soil was not heated (it had to be warm with a hole in it or else she refused). But *surprise surprise* she layed 91 eggs, and i think that the eggs remaining in the female depend on the female (health, diet. etc...). Feed her something else besides superworms, by the way... too much of a good thing can be bad! Why dont you try this...(I tried it with my male that would only eat crix) Put a bunch of superworms, crickets, silkies and waxworms in a cup and wait till she shoots her tongue, then move the cup a bit when she is a tiny bit away from her target, then she should have grabbed something else other than a superworm. Good luck with your eggs!

She's been eating a few wax worms also.. she had i think five in total last week. I tried the cup thing. If there isn't just one super she won't eat. She's being a bugger... but hopefully she'll lay soon.
Thanks for the soil advice. If she doesn't go for it tomorrow I'll try that!
Wow 91 eggs is a lot!!
