The dark stuff is the resistive material that creates the heat. It also has current flowing through it and could be dangerous if cut through. Also, the resistive material is set up to operate with a particular resistance and if you cut through some of it it could create dangerous hot spots.

What you say makes sense, but I think I was told otherwise.

I don't have it anymore, but the instructions I got from the Bean Farm, I thought, said they needed to be cut through the black line. This was for 3" only, because 11" and I believe 4" has cut lines built in.

I'm 90% sure this is what the paperwork said, but I could be mistaken. It was a few months ago. Email the BeanFarm before you cut it to make sure. Where did you get it from? They should've given you some instructions.

I got it from bean farm. The instructions that came with it said to cut through the black line for 3 and 4 in, and that the 11 inch had its own built in lines. I know thats what the instructions said, and that sounded weird to me too, since it looks like all the current would be passing through the black lines. The clear part appears to be the part that no live electricity would go through, but thats not what the instructions indicate..

what should I do?? I sure dont want to cause any fires or anything and I want to make sure I do this all right. Thanks

Joe

I cut mine through the black line, per the instructions and taped along the edge with electrical tape. I've had no problems since I installed it a few months ago.
