Ques For Pyromaniac-Bob...

trevid Jul 11, 2012 09:45 PM

hi Bob- One lizard I recently caught for scenting was small but seemed gravid. Just layed 7 eggs under a board and I was wondering your incubating temps and how long do they take to hatch. I seem to recall you just had them along side your snake eggs at around 80*. Did you also put eggs on vermiculite or use moss? Thanks, Dave.

Lizard eggs should be very similar to snakes. I caught a gravid Race Runner (whiptail), and she laid 2 eggs which hatched just fine along side some snake eggs in the low to mid 80's. I didn't pay attention to the time though.

My nephew also caught this very rare skink in my yard. I had to look it up! It is Eumeces egregius lividus also known as a Bluetail Mole Skink. It is threatened so I let it go! I have also seen Florida Sand Skinks from time to time, and they are threatened as well.

However I realize that things can go wrong, and I have to keep a close eye on those groups, to be sure they are not being adversely affected by these living conditions. Also if one happens to eat it's cagemate, it is 100% my fault, and I know the risks in advance!

I found this guy in my yard earlier this year. That blue tail is really cool, it's one of a few really nice mole skinks in Florida.

Jorge, As far as I know, there are five subspecies of mole skink.

Distribution USA (Alabama, S Georgia, Florida)

P.egregius: Florida keys and dry Tortugas.

P.similis: N Florida and S Georgia.

P.insularis: Levy county, Florida.

P.onocrepis: Florida peninsula.

P.lividus: Polk and Highlands counties, Florida.

Yeah, it does to me too. I'm definitely no expert on those things at all, but if you do a google image search on the species I listed above, so do a couple of the other species..LOL!

Your eggs look nice and pink! Lizards will hatch in 54 days average at 80-82 F. Mine are going 61 days this year as I am incubating everybody at 77-81.5 F to avoid heat spikes. I finally figured out to put the incubator boxes on the floor in the coolest part of the cabin which is making a big difference heat wise. I use a mix of vermiculite/perlite 1:1 with distilled water 1:1 weight. I maintain enough water to cause light fogging of the egg container lids, but not dripping.

When they hatch they are Leapin Lizards! So have them in a container with a lid during incubation, and when they hatch put the incubator container in a larger container so when they leap out you wont lose them.

Some of this season's hatchlings. Many more clutches to go. Found two big healthy clutches the other day under the water pans.

And keep us posted on all the hatchlings. Just think how many eggs you would of had if you had decided to breed this year...lol Dave

You're welcome.
I have 19 pyro eggs, 9 bull snake eggs, 9 gopher snake eggs, and about fifty lizard eggs. The first due to hatch is one of the pyro clutches in about three days, and more lizards.

In the lizard incubator container as they need oxygen during incubation.
