Fruit Fly Recipe (LELE)

TylerStewart Oct 05, 2003 03:35 PM

Ok here's my dilemma.... I found a recipe somewhere for some fruit fly medium using potato flakes, powdered sugar, yeast and a 50 50 mix of water and vinegar. The vinegar part sounded weird to me so I did 2 vials, one without vinegar (only water) and one with viegar and water. I put about 30 flies in them both 4 or 5 days ago and so far so good. But I've gotta make alot more of them, like maybe 20 vials, and I need to know which is gonna work better. Flies are on the way (wormman.com) and I don't have time to experiment anymore. What is the vinegar going to do? The only differernce I see is that the one with only water seems to have more dead flies so far than the other one. I wanna do it right the first time since I have so many I'm doing all at once. I know there's other recipes but this one seemed simple and I had easy access to everything I needed for it. I'd like to keep it that way. Thanks!

Tyler-

There are many different FF recipes. If I remember correctly the vinegar acts as a mold inhibitor, has something to do with the acid, I cant remember off the top of my head. You may be better off getting a pre-made mix, until you can work the bugs out so to speak with your homemade mix. Also note that some mixes will produce more FF then others. Best of luck, let us know how things go!
