Very cool. Is that a prairie kingsnake? That's a funky looking cricket/grasshopper.

>>Very cool. Is that a prairie kingsnake? That's a funky looking cricket/grasshopper.

There are two Southern Plains or Thornscrub Ratsnakes pictured that you are probably referring to. They are our South Texas Cornsnakes actually......Meahllmorum. We call them Pantherophis guttatus meahllmorum......rather than emoryi.

The funky looking grasshopper is a Mormon Cricket but we call them Katydids even though they aren't.....LOL

One of these days....LOL
After thousands of miles of driving and hundreds of road cuts shined I have yet to find one.....But the by-catch is fun too....LOL

I'm also in search of some South Texas triangulum...
I've found many of those but haven't in years......

Yes sir....
Just recently I found a huge one south of Del Rio on HWY 277 and another rather large one on 624 close to my area.....both were DORs though and I didn't get any photos as I pass on those photo opportunities a lot of the time because it is rather sad thinking someone probably could've avoided killing the animals......

Years ago I found many here in Nueces county and a few in San Patricio county......

I just recently began to get serious about field herping again.....It is so much fun....and I missed it.......

Oh...
Kinda the same, but different.
In 2006 while working in Benicia, CA I found a yearling Pacific Coast Gopher snake and brought her home with me. She is currently the only pituophis I have now...

Awesome man, coral snakes are one of my all time favorite finds. I seem to come across them everywhere, easily the venomous I catch the most. Cool!

Here atrox are the most abundant venomous.....maybe even the most abundant snake in some locales.....
Coral snakes are somewhat rare compared to atrox but not necessarily rare in their range.......this one was about 30 inches....the largest I've personally found but the record is a whopping 4 feet........

The Splendida is over two feet......found her north of Terlingua......near Big Bend.

That is a sand crab......I see hundreds of these a night on Padre and Mustang island while hunting for island triangulum and getula........

Mustang and North Padre Island is where I mainly herp.
The two islands are separated by Packery Channel.
And yes, I've found an island population of getula there as well as triangulum.

The string of islands start in the north at Matagorda Island, then San Jose, then Mustang and Padre.

That's strange to see islands like that. Just like the outer banks. Those are all natural, right?

yes they are natural islands.....
Just like the Outer Banks but a smaller lagoon between the mainland and the islands......From Matagorda Bay down to Baffin Bay......with many in between.....I grew up on St. Charles, Copano, Aransas & Nueces Bay.....Been a beach bum all my life...LOL

The only thing that is manmade through those bays is the intercoastal waterway/canal that is dredged enabling Tankers to navigate from port to port.

That's very interesting. You're lucky to be able to herp there like that. The Islands we have, you have to take a boat out there. No chance of roadcruising or setting up boardlines.

Holbrooki/Splendida-ish.......Unless you go by that Burbrink rubbish....lol

Sorry...I didn't find that one but a guy I know did...

I believe it was flipped...

I know Hubbs and others placed tin out in the dunes years ago......I used to just walk those tin lines and find triangulum, getula and other cool stuff....like hognose and scarlet snakes....

I'm trying to scrounge up some old photos of mine, back then I didn't carry a camera with me nor did we even have cell phones..

Very cool John. Field herping IS my first love. You have some good stuff there. I like the coral. I used to keep one as a kid. (still would if I could legally). I think they are the prettiest snake in the U.S. Mine was a pain to feed though as it would only eat other snakes and I did not enjoy doing that. Keep up the good work bro.

John, didn't you learn from before, don't talk to the cops, ever! That's funny you guys both kept corals as pets, they really like skinks. That's not a joke, I have kept several and they ate them right away. Your in the east? Where do you start finding Texas corals?

Lol....
I spoke to a cop last night that pulled me over since he saw me drive out of a field then pull over to let him pass....
He asked what I was doing....when I told him I was looking for reptiles he wanted to see what I found so I showed him some photos and he wished me luck.....And let me go on my way....

I live in deep south Texas but on the coast.....East Texas is from Houston to Louisiana....
Texas coral snake range begins in the East just west if the Mississippi river in central Louisiana then stops in the west north of Del Rio. They are found in North Texas (DFW area) but not in the northern Hill Country nor the panhandle....

There gave even been a few cool amels found in Texas...
