Is getting a baby beardie to eat suppose to be hard???

keith_ecko Oct 05, 2003 04:25 PM

I've had Thor for a week now and I'm not absolutely happy with his intake...He's only had his Powersun bulb on really for 2 days now but for the other 5 days he was without UVB! Then This Friday when the Powersun came in I was forced basically to rearrange his enclosure to accomodate for the change the Powersun made to the temps..So to make a long story short THOR isn't eating too well right now..Will this pick up? Is he just totally stressed from moving around and changing the tank around a few times already??? Should I be handling him much...I just want what's best for him....Any info is appreciated!

he's not eating crix well, or only greens? he could be stressed rom the changes; id avoid handling him for a few days and make sure you dont leave uneaten crix crawling around the tank

I think your dragon is a little stressed out Keith, I would keep handling to a minimum for a week or so, and cover up his glass sides so he can relax a bit. Some dragons take quite a bit of time to settle in. Think about it he had a trip to the show in a bin with 30 other dragons dark, then on a table with lots of people looking, touching, petting, then the ride to your place to find himself away from his buddies in a different place with all 4 sides clear, and most likely being handled more then the breeder handled him. Most breeders use tubs so the dragons can't see out. I would give him some time to relax, cover his sides up till he's comfortable in his cage, and eating. During this time make sure he is staying hydrated. Most babies will take water from an eye dropper if it's dripped on his nose. If he hasn't drank any water or eaten any greens cause they have water too. Pick him up with the dropper and part the back of his lips so his mouth opens a bit and put some water in. This will most likely cause him to start licking. Most important thing to do while a dragon is adjusting is keeping them hydrated. Even if they aren't eating to much as babies water is the most important. Without water they will become lethargic this is when the new owners start to freak and think the baby is sick, most of the time it's just dehydration. Gatorade makes a new water called propel fitness water it has a lot less sugar then regular kinds and also has vitamins B6, B12, and vit c, and e which all help acclimating dragons. Most of those vitamins are found in the jump start and products like that. So just take it slow, and I'm sure he will come around for you. Sounds like a normal adjustment time to me. I know my first dragon the first couple days were nerve racking. Just relax, keep him hydrated, cover his view for a week or two, and keep handling low. Good Luck Keith!! Any other questions or concerns just ask away.

Yeah I moved mine in to a bigger cage but it didn't seem to hurt him though. He is prob stressed out a little. It could be the lack of UVB. Mine sure did change when I got the active UV. Hope he eats better soon.
