Some special locality Cal kings

RossPadilla Jul 18, 2012 09:19 PM

I thought I'd post these pictures of some really cool looking Yuma morph kings my friend is holding onto for another friend. Both were found in the wild last month near El Centro California.

The female.

The male. and this is the darkest Yuma morph I've ever seen. Absolutely amazing!

My friend also has a trio of het Whitewater CA hypos from my line. We are hoping to prove this hypo gene out next year.

Here's the king I found at Whitewater in 2005 that I believe is hypo.

Thanks, Billy. That's how I feel also. There's nothing like finding morphs in the wild. Luckily with Cal kings, there are so many different types that occur naturally.

Killer stuff as always Ross.....
I really like those yumensis kings.......
And I believe that one you found is surely a hypomelanistic.........
Hope you produce some more next year.....

No kidding, there's just something about those melanistic type western animals that I really like.

Thanks, John. I do too. Its been on my mind these past 7 years. It just took a while to get the male.

Very cool, is that a rare locale to find?

I've never seen the El Centro locale ever offered and the Whitewater shouldn't be hard to find, but I only know of two guys that breed them. Most Cal king guys are not into locality, so any locale is pretty tough to find. I think the Long Beach grease king locale is the most established locale out there.

Wow!,....awesome "yumensis"!..

Yeah, that hypo sure does look hypo if I ever saw a hypo..LOL!

Thanks a lot, Dave. It is my coolest find ever.

Very nice Ross. I really like that dark male, but especially your yet to proven hypo! Hope it proves out.

RossPadilla Jul 19, 2012 09:18 AM

Thank a lot, Dennis. I'm really hoping also. I'd be very puzzled if it didn't, because that king is abnormally light for any desert locale.

Real Nice Ross, that hypo one is just sweet. You don't see very much of the "Yuma" kings, nice post.

Thanks a lot! Yeah, you don't see a lot of the Yumas, especially the ones from CA.

Thanks a lot, Joe. Vic Herrick found those amazing Yuma kings. He also got them to breed before giving them to my buddy and now the female is getting close to dropping her eggs.

Hmmmm, What part of the road on WW did you find that hypo on?

Was it near the top by the bridge? Near the bottom where it is dry and kinda flat? Or near the middle section by the canyon walls and the frogs?

My guess is you found it near the bottom of the road where it is dry. Below the houses.

Also have you ever walked WW at night and if so, did you find any boas?
-----

RossPadilla Jul 19, 2012 10:41 AM

Yes, on the bottom just a little south of the houses. I couldn't stop in time, so I ran back with a flashlight and my camera. I got this in situ picture before he even moved. It wasn't until the flash went off that I saw he was brown. I took her and about every 20 minutes, while roadcruising, I'd stop and look at her and wonder why she was brown. It wasn't till about 2 days later that the thought popped up in my head that it might be hypo. lol She was about 18" when I found her.

No, I've never tried walking out there, because they have all these signs that say no tresspassing fire hazard zone, or something to that effect.

Great kings. The Whitewater is awesome. Glad it is in your hands, I know you will put it to good use.

RossPadilla Jul 20, 2012 02:29 PM

Thanks a lot, Mark. Yeah, it could have easily fallen into someone else's hands that didn't know what it was, or never bred it to make the morph available some day. Or even some tree huger that doesn't believe in collecting anything. LOL
-----

DMong Jul 20, 2012 02:53 PM

Or even much worse, bred to a Florida king, or Honduran, etc..

I'm really glad to see you having them too, and not some typical hobby schlep that would breed them to anything he/she had just to make babies.

Those are pretty cool Ross! I really like that hypo a lot!

Disclaimer: I do keep several snakes in pairs, and some in groups. However I realize that things can go wrong, and I have to keep a close eye on those groups, to be sure they are not being adversely affected by these living conditions. Also if one happens to eat it's cagemate, it is 100% my fault, and I know the risks in advance!
