Found a new ant

cable_hogue Oct 05, 2003 04:42 PM

Was out hiking and found one Coastal HL in a new area which was cool. Hiked through 2 miles of brush and sage only to find him 10 feet from my truck on my return. Why is it these little ones love the roads so much? Only saw the one but I was glad to confirm them in a new area.

I also found a new ant species I believe. Here are some photos Gordon. I know the color is not great. I am working on a magnifier for this stuff. The body is a dirty redish with a black metasoma. Click the link to see more.

Cable best I can guess is that it is Messor andrei, those long epinotal spines are something of a giveaway. Overall the pics aren't bad, just need more light.
