Cool South Texas Find.....OT

Jlassiter Jul 21, 2012 04:58 PM

We searched all over McMullen county last night for triangulum....
We had no luck in that department but we did manage to find our most popular snakes.....3 atrox, 3 checkered garters, 3 meahllmorum and this little gem.

I like how the South Texas and especially the Mexican Rhinocheilus have an abundance of black....I thought this was a Splendida when I first saw it.....they are so Lampropeltis like......

This is the first one I've seen down this way in years.....So it is a cool find in my opinion......

I've been wanting to show you this one. I'm not sure if you've seen it, but it was found somewhere in Mexico by Jason Jones. It has the most read I've ever seen on a Long nose. I'm not sure if there is a different species down there.

Thanks Joe....
I don't think being a lizard feeder should deter folks from working with them and keeping them......
We all keep many lampropeltis that require some work to get them on rodents.
I've successfully gotten 3 of my 4 longnose snakes on rodents.....with all the same techniques used for alterna, mexicana, holbrooki, corns and milks....

That is another great looking one. There seems to be enough variability in them that someone could do some nice selective breeding projects for sure!

Disclaimer: I do keep several snakes in pairs, and some in groups. However I realize that things can go wrong, and I have to keep a close eye on those groups, to be sure they are not being adversely affected by these living conditions. Also if one happens to eat it's cagemate, it is 100% my fault, and I know the risks in advance!

I think it's a neat pattern with the dark overall look, and small red spots down it's back. Did you keep it?

I recall seeing a similar Long nosed posted in FHF a few years back but yours is the little gem you claim... that red spotting is very cool.

I not a big fan of taking things from the wild but if you're going to be breeding them... I hope you kept that one.

John, Nice pic of a interesting looking longnose. Glad someone is out there looking for some McMullen co. triangulum, I have heard that area had some decent rains this spring, so you should have a good chance. Only bad news I have heard is that the oil field traffic is tremendous on TX-16-624 & most roads there. Have you been having to deal with alot of traffic while there? I look forward to a future year when I can re-visit McMullen county myself again, to find another triangulum myself. Heres a photo of my first ever wc McMullen annulata male, that I found on 5-14-87 & still have him here, now, alive yet ageing....Another clutch of 6 eggs, only 3 fertile, from him bred to a female also from McMullen county, due to hatch any day now...Later, John

Thanks John.....
And yes the Eagle Ford Oil Boom oil field traffic is leaving FM 624 and TX 16 littered with DORs.......but we've been getting off those literally beaten paths lately.

In the past we've had great luck finding triangulum in Nueces, Jim Wells, Live Oak and McMullen counties but they have managed to elude us this season......

We will be out trying some more though.....especially after seeing your smokin annulata......
