Zoomed reptisun distance question

Hefe Oct 05, 2003 05:36 PM

If you were to build a 4'x2'x2' cage and you were to use the zoomed 5.0 reptisun flourecent light, according to their web site it would have to be 10-12 inches from the beardie for him to get the effects. How do people accomplish this? Will I have to suspend the light down inside the cage or can it be 10-12 inches from the higher spots in the cage? (like rocks or driftwood?) Does it have to penetrate all the way to every part of the cage? Thanks!

and to get the ideal temperature range I have a raised basking area that is about 8-9" away from POWERSUN and I get a steady 110 degrees......I would say raise the basking area or put a regular incandescent in that same area with a low wattage bulb enough to raise the temps!

Reptisuns and all tube lights have limited reach. It wouldn't be hard to hang it in the enclosure if the back is wooden. In my opinion I'd use that light with a smaller cage then get one of the mercury bulbs like Powersun or active UV. Not only do they reach much further they are much stronger and last longer. Reptisuns have to be changed evfery 6mnths so it is actually cheaper, easier, and better to get the self balasted mercury bulbs. I love them and will not change to tubes again.

I have started a project where I am testing the intensity of different kinds of bulbs that produce UVB. I am also testing how far the UVB reaches and how strong it is as certain distances. This info may be of some help to you. The link to my website is below, then click on "Reptisun 5.0 Testing" or any other bulb testing to get an idea of how far the UVB reaches and you can compare it to other bulbs. I have just started this research and hope to have many more bulbs tested by the end of the year.
