When does everyone start cycling their temps for breeding and....more

PerryC. Oct 05, 2003 05:39 PM

do I cycle all my BP's or just the ones I plan to breed. This is my first attempt and I am hoping I don't screw it up LOL. Any advice is appreciated!

This is my first try, also, so don't take anything I say as gospel, but here is what I am doing:
Started nighttime temp drop on Aug 10 only with the 1.2 I was planning on breeding. 2nd week of Sept, I put 1.1 together, then switched them out weekly. After a month, I will give the male a week break, then put females in again for a week at a time. I plan to keep this up till about late Jan/early Feb, then resume normal temps and seperate them.
Don't know if it will work, but according to the research I've done, and the questions I've asked, I think it should!
Good luck!

PS-You don't need to cycle the ones you aren't breeding, but I've never heard of any adverse effects from cycling and not breeding, either.

The days are getting shorter and the temperatures are dropping with no help from me. And I’m sure the ball pythons are responding to these changes. Sometime near the end of January, 2004 I’ll pair up those females who have sufficient weight with appropriate males for a couple of weeks. They’ll do what comes naturally. Eggs will result. That’s my strategy. Luckily, ball pythons make it easy for us.

This is my recipe, works for me like a charm.
Throughout the year I set my temps at 86 daytime and 80 nighttime. This is ambient temps, not hotspots. Starting on October 1st I start slowly dropping the nighttime temps to 72 degrees. I usually take about 2 weeks to get it this low. I then leave it at 72 until January 1st. I then slow bring the temps back to normal. All through the cool period, the daytime temps stay at 86. Its that simple for me. Throughout the cool period I breed, and I continue to breed after I warm back up. I usually breed until March 1st. After that I'm done.
