How do I get rid of the fruit flys loose in my house?

numbsun Oct 05, 2003 06:40 PM

I've got fruit flys all over the place. Please tell me how to trap them, or poison them or something. The sooner the better. If it is of any use to you, all the flys are melanagastar(sp?).

Thank you in advance for your help.

You can place a couple open cups of vinegar or something that attracts them and they will drown in it, also open water containers seems to attract them.

Luckily, my spider population has grown quite a bit since I started keeping darts and they do a good job on the flys, although my wife just loves all of them webs through out the house !

I take those sticky mouse traps and lay them on the back of the tans so the flies get trapped in them when they climb out of the tank. It seems to help quite a bit. Not nearly as many loose flies as before I started doing this.

I don't bother to get rid of them. I just serve "high protein" salads with lots of pepper so no one knows the difference. The escapees from the flightless sorts die off soon. When the majority of your house is dedicated to dart-frogs, the rest of the family either just gets used to it, or can move out and pay rent.

One thing you can do is use the vacuum hose to just suck them up. This also tends to clean the house, as well. They also feed my house spiders when there is a paucity of house flies during the winter. Raising dart frogs in your house isn't really compatible with "Good Housekeeping" magazine decorum.
