a near turtle tragedy!

golfdiva Oct 05, 2003 06:48 PM

I came home tonight to find my 3 year old snapper missing from her indoor pond! I didn't panic too much, as I figured she had to be in the house, and I'd find her sooner or later.

We did find her - under the stove with a mouse trap sprung on her neck! Now I paniced!

I got the trap open and she pulled her head out. I put her back in the pond, and incredibly she seems to be ok!

What tough necks snappers must have!

Whew!

oh yea, we quickly put a couple of feet of chicken wire securely around the pond so she can't repeat her performance.

I dont know whats with the chicken wire unless its a lid, because ive seen snappers climb over a 6' chain link fence. The only difference with chicken wire is they might smash it and cut themselves if they got caught.

As far as snappers necks go, ask anyone who has eaten a snapping turtle they caught, unless you parboil them, you need tin snips to cut thru the skin. The skin is really tough, and its just a huge muscle under that.

The chicken wire has effectively kept her from climbing out again...and she has tried! Can't imagine her being able to break the wire.
