Cape gopher species ID help- Pics inside

lucasjennings Aug 01, 2012 05:34 PM

I posted pics of this one before. I bought it as a female but turned out to be male. When I first got it, I was thinking it was a Pituophis catenifer vertebralis but now I am wondering if I have a Pituophis vertebralis bimaris. I am starting to shop for females to put with him but don't want to end up making mutts by accident.

HI Lucas

Cool looking snake, but I never seen anything like it.

Sellers claim at the time of purchase? It's a beautiful animal, whatever subspecies/locale it represents!

A friend bought it from John Ginter who got it from someone. My friend bought it as a hatchling. I contacted John about it trying to lock down info on the color phase but never asked the species info.

Don't know what it is Lucas but its a special looking one.

IDon't worry, it's the "patternless phase" Cape Gopher (as in Pituophis catenifer vertebralis). Occasionally available about a decade ago, they mysterically vanished into thin air since then. Definately one to hold on to, IMHO.

There's also a brief description of this variant on the Pituophis Page. Link: http://www.kingsnake.com/pituophis/p_c_vertebralis.html.

i read both of those back when i first picked him up. i just saw some pics of the baja capes and it started getting me thinking of which one i had. the big blocks on his tail are really dark so i thought maybe it was a baja.
