2 New Iggies!

lucy May 27, 2003 12:56 PM

Hi everyone! I'm new to this forum but not to iggies. I just rescued these two from a school. They were both being kept in a 30gal aquarium, nothing to climb on, fed iceberg lettuce once or twice a week, and had no heat source not to mention no UVB either. They are both in amazing shape though for being kept in such conditions. They are about 2.5 years old and both about 2-2.5ft long. The male is more feisty than the female and a bit smaller. You just just see the beginnings of rubber jaw on him so I'll make sure to pack him full of vitamins. I named him Flint. He's the one on top in the pic The female is very very sweet. She's real calm. She'll hang out on your shoulder all day if you let her. I named her Zippo. I put the both of them in a 6ft tall by 2.5ft wide by 2.5ft deep cage for now utill they get bigger. There's shelves and stuff in there for them too. Well anyway, sorry for the long post thanks for reading though!

Hey!! Cant believe people still don´t know how to take care of igs... I mean is that hard to buy a book or to do some research on the internet about their care before buying it?? Iceberg lettuce twice a week... poor little guys...
But I´m sure you´re gonna do a pretty good job taking care of'em!!
Good luck and welcome to the forum!!
Later,
Dan

Hi! Good for you for rescuing them! Sounds like they're pretty small for their age - that makes sense, though, considering the care they've received so far. I'm sure they'll start a growth spurt soon under better care.

I looked at your picture, and it looks to me like they may both be females. No big jowls or lumps on the top of the head... If so, this would make things easier on you... don't have to worry about two girls mating. Or the male's breeding season, either. Anyway, it's just a thought.

What beauties! I'm surprised they're alive after such treatment.
Watch out- as they bloom under your care, one of your "girls" may turn out to be a male! Malnourished males sometimes don't develop characteristically masculine features until they're cared for correctly. In any case, I would separate them as soon as possible. I love their names! BTW, why do you think one of them is a male? Is it the bottom one? I can't tell from the picture.

I had originally thought Flint was a girl too but "she" has quite a large bulge under her tail which make me think she's a he. Plus I noticed him head bobbing at Zippo earlier. Zippo has absolutely no bulge and I'm pretty sure that she's a she. At any rate, whatever they are doesn't matter to me, I just love them both so much already and I've only had them 2 days!
