Day Gecko

arty_155 Oct 05, 2003 07:37 PM

Hi all this is my first post here. About 6 weeks ago i bought a day gecko at petsmart mainly because i thought she was so cute and was half price. since then i havent been able to get her to eat much ive tried everything crickets, mealworms, babyfood, fresh fruit everything i can think of. she sheds about once every 2 weeks and eats it right away which leads me to believe that shes not eating. i need some help and any suggestions id hate to lose her.

Thanks,

Mike

How big of a tank do you have her in? Humidity? Temps? How old is it? What species of 'Day gecko'?

You need to provide lots of cover and foliage for it to feel secure, and to minimize stress. New geckos need time to adjust to theire new surroundings, but IMO 6 weeks should be sufficient.

Crickets shouldnt be bigger than the width of your geckos mouth, because then theylle have a hard time eating it. I tried babyfood for my days before, but they didnt seem to like it, so i guess it depends on the individual your feeding the fruit to.

Geckos eat theyre shed skin (which is normal) for nutrients and calcium, and to clear theyre scent (in the wild) so predators dont invade on them. but you should dust your food every second feeding as well.

You need to tell us specs of your tank. Be sure to provide hiding places, and bamboo for pearching, UV lighting, and a basking spot.

Hope this helps.

i have her in a 60 gallon tank thats split in half with one side having my corn snake in it and one sie with her. temp is normally at 85-90 degrees and humidity is usually at 80% or so but never lower then that. i dont have any bamboo but i have acouple of ferns a hide for her a big rock she love to be on and moss coverage on the ground. i have uv lights and a basking area she usually sits below the lamp on the glass. shes a giant madagascar day gecko. she was sexed and is a female but i have no idea about age.
