It was 23 summers ago...

...when I purchased this snake as a yearling.

I had seen an adult male tangerine Honduran in a pet store and bought it for $300. (Imagine that, 300 bucks for a normal adult Honduran!)

This female was bought as a mate for the male, they were the first snakes I've ever bred and they kicked off a fascination with this particular subspecies that continues on today. This interest in Hondurans occurred long before there were any Honduran morphs.

Heck, back then there weren't any snake breeder webpages and no kingsnake.com. "Vivarium" magazine had yet to come and go, along with "Fauna" and a bunch of other herp-related publications.

Well today she passed away. I saw it coming, she had not eaten in six weeks and was losing her muscle tone. It's kind of wierd to lose a snake that you kept for half your life!

I guess as a "consolation prize" I've got a clutch of Northern Pines hatching today.

And finally, my first Corn Snake eggs hatching too.

Yeah, I know what you mean Tim. Sorry to hear that, but she most definitely had a nice long and healthy life in your care.

Cool babies too!

Bummer Tim. After 23 years I can only imagine how weird it must be.

Not sure if this will sound the way it's meant, but... I'm not looking forward to the day when one of mine passes but I do hope, like you, I can say it's been 23 years.

Congrats on the new ones... that is something I am looking forward to!

One of the nicer looking Hondos I've seen Tim.

You can tell she was taken care of well and had a nice long life in your care. I'm glad to see that you were in it for the long haul.

I'm thinking of downsizing my collection this year, but I can't help but wonder what happens to all the neonates and other adults once I sell them? Will they be cared for correctly? I guess I do what I can to sell to people with experience, but there is only so much you can do.

I wish everyone had your same commitment, sorry for your loss.

Wow Tim. That's a sad day, but that was a pretty good long life for her. I know you learned a lot from that animal and won't soon forget her. It's not much consolation, but it is nice to have a photographic record to look back with and reminisce. As your other pics show, life does go on and you will have plenty to keep your attention on. Thanks for sharing. Makes me think, I'm not getting any younger either!

That, my friend, is a testimony of excellent care and be comforted in knowing that your snake had a long, healthy, and happy life!

Sorry for your loss Tim. I've had one of my kings for 8 years this year and he's kind of special to me already, he's like a friend, I couldn't even imagine losing him right now let alone after 23 years. Cool pine snake though, congrats on those!
