Mercury Vapor Heat

-clickman Oct 05, 2003 09:00 PM

Is mercury vapor heat really hot? I thought that it was mildly hot, but I just read of someones bulb touching plastic and instantly melting it. Any idea how many degrees it'll raise a tank? It seems like a great solution for me, since it's hard to get my light close to the basking spot without having it get close enough to the basking light to have the strip light melt.

ive had non-mvbs melt plastic when it gets too close. just depends on the wattage. i dont notice much difference in heat between my mvbs and plain household bulbs, the benefit is really the heat and uvb in one source

I actually think they are less hot than normal lights of same wattage. Any light gets hot enough to melt plastic. I love the merc lamps. Soooo much better than tubes. I recommend them.

It was more my fault that it melted the plastic of the aquarium than the light itself..Yes all bulbs will melt that plastic, so I guess it's wise to take safety when using anything that hot...I do like the MERCURY BULBS BETTER ALREADY..NO BIG CLUNKY LIGHT STRIP!!!!!
