Rodents suppliers - Oklahoma

Warren_Booth Aug 18, 2012 06:02 PM

Hi Folks,
Having just moved to Tulsa, OK from Raleigh, NC, I am now looking for a good rodent supplier. Years ago I used Rodent Pro, but now have become hesitant based on recent events. Additionally, I see many rodent suppliers offering ground delivery, taking 2 to 3 days. Is this really a viable option for rodents?

Thanks folks,

Warren

For the past three years I have ordered all my frozen rodents from American Rodent Company. Jud McClanahan, Kelly Haller's partner, told me about them. American Rodent has always sent me extremely high quality rodents that are very clean, proper size, and nicely packaged with free shipping. I receive them here in Pennsylvania two days after ordering. They arrive packed in dry ice and never a problem even in the hottest summer months. Give them a try and I think you will be well pleased. I can't believe ANYONE uses them for feeders for boas. Going back almost 10 years now, there's a WELL documented history of this particular supplier KILLING or permanently scarring LOTS of boas (happened to me too). Well, it was well documented until it was deleted off of the forums here to protect them as they are a HUGE advertiser with KS (which was the precipitating event for me to leave this forum as the "main" forum I visited and posted to, along with MANY others). Perhaps if all of those threads (evidence) had not been deleted over the years, it would be MUCH easier to show that they have been harming the herp community with their practices long enough to warrant them being out of business. But hey, do we blame them, or the people who want their rodents SUPER cheap? After all, they're simply filling a market niche (a HUGE one at that) by trimming as many costs as possible.

As far as I'm concerned, this latest issue is simply another straw on an already dead camel's back. But, I'm sure they'll continue to be in business because regardless of the preponderance of evidence against something, MANY people simply "can't pass up a good deal" - even if that good deal kills their boas (years of evidence) and potentially the businesses employees and customers (newest outbreak).

As for American Rodent Supply (which was recommended by someone else)... Personally, I can't trust feeders that were not raised by the person/business I'm buying from. And taking that a step further, ALL of ARS' rodents are LAB SURPLUS. Here's a quick blog with more info: http://www.deviantconstrictors.com/blog/lab-surplus-rodents.html Personally, I'm not keen on feeding rodents to my boas that will light up like a Christmas tree under certain lighting conditions!

I've just started using Loxahatchee Herp Hatchery (after The Mouse Factory went out of business) and am VERY impressed. In fact, my first shipment from them arrived and when unpacking it I actually said out loud "this looks like it could survive a nuclear bomb!!" Get in touch with them. They may not be as cheap as Rodent Pro or ARS, but you get what you pay for.

What's written above is purely my opinion. In fact, MOST of what you read on the internet is someone's opinion. Don't take it too seriously

It feels like the best way to get a good supplier of rodents is....

If you supply your own. Just get some breeding units set up and go for it.

In the long run, it's worth it. That is, if you have the space. It doesn't take a lot of space, unless you have a huge number of snakes.

If you have a large number of snakes to feed....

Try oklahomarodentsupply.com

They might be a better option. I haven't tried them yet, but my baby boas are getting bigger and I'm not a fan of growing the larger rats. The pinks, fuzzies and even pups are good. It's the weaned rats I don't like. LOL.
If you do try them. Let me know what you think of them.
