sick petstore leo

buffysmom Oct 05, 2003 10:10 PM

My hubby & I have been watching a medium sized leo in our local exotic pet store. It's eyes are closed & they look puffy. I pointed this out to the employees a few weeks ago & they took it in back to treat it. Again about a week & a half later I pointed out the same condition to an employee, who said they'd go treat it w/ neosporin. Today it has the same problem & looks to be losing a bit of weight, as it can only catch whatever prey runs right in front of it. Any ideas what might be wrong w/ it? My hubby's considering offering them a reduced price for it & treating it ourselves. Any thoughts?

As tough as it is to see a leo in bad shape, purchasing it would just encourage the store to get more. Apart from that, you don't know what you might be introducing to your healthy reptiles at home by bringing it into the house. If it has anything contagious there is a good chance it will spread. The best thing to do is leave it at the store, and try to encourage the store to take better care of their animals.
hopefully they will pull their socks up

I have a leo I thought I was taking good care of and never showed any signs of being sick, and is a very enthusiastic eater. Several months ago she suddenly started having no interest in food and her eyes started to have a kind of puss on them. She would rarely open her eyes and became very lethargic. When I got her to the vet her examined the fluid from her eyes and all he could tell me is that she seemed to have a bad bacteria infection. He gave me a combo of Amoxil/Baytril (sp?) to give her daily and within 7-10 days she was better than ever...
