OT--- communal nest site

joecop Aug 22, 2012 09:54 PM

I posted this on a different forum but thought some here would get a kick out of the pics. I am not going into the whole story here but I had to use my buddies cell pics he took the day of the event because I am too dumb to check my camera for the chip when I leave the house. In total he removed 210 eggs and there were MANY, MANY, hatched out already. He took 90 home in a tub (thought it was 70-80 but some were burried) and they hatched and were released. A makeshift nest was made for the rest and I have not been back to see how that did yet but he did an awesome job and I shot it with a temp gun and it was the same temps as the soil in the stump. (79)

To clarrify, these were saved as a large tree was cut down that was dead and very close to his neighbors house. Last yr he saved tons of hatchings, this yr the guy was pulling the stump and he also was able to find eggs. Glad the neighbor did not just kill them and glad my buddy and his family did what they did.

Joe

All the eggs were from Black Rats?

Joe told me, and also showed me buckets of hatchlings that were released, and every single snake found and released from there were definitely Black Ratsnakes......just crazy cool!..

Like I said before when I first saw this, it's one of the coolest things I have ever seen in the natural snake world! Glad all of you did what you did for the snakes my friend.

Those numbers were just staggering!..

Thanks Doug. Yep, one of the coolest things I have seen as well. Gerard, I did see the adults in a nearby field having a drink together after laying. There is quite a bit of attention being given to this event and there will probably be some studies done if the property owner does not mind. The home was built in the 1800's and I would bet money on it that the snakes are brumating in the foundation and using the stump to lay and have been for some time now. Pretty cool stuff.

Did you find any evidence of little liquor bottles and tiny cigarette butts lying around the old house's foundation by any chance?..LOL!

Seems like they pick the best place to lay, must not be much else around there.

I wonder if communal nesting sites are the norm and whether any(or most) of the females that laid there also hatched there. Lots of questions...

Proof that snakes know a good place to lay eggs when they find it.

Thanks Joe for posting this! Such an interesting find!

Kudos to you and your friend for not destroying them. Wonderful snakes, kept the rats out of my chicken coop and barn like champs.

Black rat snakes were very common in Southwest Michigan were I used to have a farm. One fall in the big corn field next to my pond I saw hundreds of them in the mowed area between the swampy brush and the corn, all with their heads up like an army of infantry ready to invade the corn for all the rats and other pests there.

Very cool Joe... kudos to your friend for taking the time to care for all those eggs.

Think Thomas is right with there being a lot of puzzled snakes in the area next year.

Aaron Aug 24, 2012 02:33 AM
