Budgetts Frog Care (Andy)

Lenny May 27, 2003 01:15 PM

Hi Andy:
Could you tell me how to keep budgetts frogs or direct me to a good care sheet?

I keep mine on a 2/3 land set up. For about 6 months of the year I brumate him (not consecutively). This allows for somewhat natural conditions as I have always heard they have to be allowed to brumate throughout the year. Care when they are not brumating is similar to a horned frog, though they are more aquatic. Mine will only take fish for the most part but will also take nightcrawlers everyonce in a while. Temps are about the same as a horned frogs as well.

Thanks Andy! One question: What do you mean by not consecutively?
How do you know when to brumate the frog?

Listen to Andy and a few people on here like Marc. i've lost my first horned frog a long time ago due to bad caresheet on the internet. i was so mad. Now there are quite a few good out there, but I've never seen one on budget frogs. You might want find a good book, also. Either buy a few, or check them out from your local library.

6 months of burmating straight could kill a frog, and I am sure in the wild some definitely die as they wait for the rains. I try to brumate mine in one or two month intervals. The actual time frame can be up to you. You might only want to brumate for about 2 weeks. These frogs just brumate for about half the year in the wild and I try to keep that about accurate. I don't see it, but I check on him every few days to make sure he is not drying out too much. Then just mist him heavily and bring the temps up to normal and the frog will be up and shedding soon after.
