Pink Pearl Ghost Cal King - another one.

Kerby... Aug 30, 2012 10:56 AM

Yup, popped out another .... a Pink Pearl Ghost California Kingsnake. That would be one that is displaying both Ghost & Lavender at the same time, oh and found the daddy is het albino in another project, so this Pink Pearl is also possible het albino, as well as his siblings.

So in this clutch; Ghosts, Lavenders, a Pink Pearl, and possible triple hets (Ghost, Lavender, Albino).......oh and then there is that striper in there that is not Ghost, not Lavender, etc....but purple brown looking....

Killer clutch Kerby!

So the striper is not considered a hypo?
It is just considered an odd colored normal?

Well....there is no hypo gene in this mix. So It is hard to call something hypo, not knowing if it is a recessive gene. This happens a lot when breeding 2 recessive genes to each other, suppose to get all normals that are double hets, but.....these "purple hypo" snakes keep popping up.

So, no I do not know what to call them.

Now in some of my other projects I DO HAVE the hypo gene in those, so those would be hypos.

Why do the bandeds look dark purple?
-----

Kerby... Aug 30, 2012 01:04 PM

Because...I don't know.

When I first bred a Lavender (banded) male to my Ghost - het albino (female) I was expecting all the babies to be normal looking and obviously double hets. But a couple of them came out purple/hypo looking. That also happened with the Ghost x Hypo project.

So now that I am breeding the double hets back to each other, some are popping out that way. I have no idea what is going on.

Could it be co dominant?

John, did it cross your mind that dark purple in your snake could be from what's going on here? That would mean its a hypermel het for something like lavender. That would mean BHB made a mistake in naming them, but that's very possible. It would probably also explain the non ruby eyes. Just a thought.

It didn't until I read your post....LOL
It could be possible but, I have no idea unless I saw the parents and knew what was their genetics...

Mine isn't that "purple."
It looks more hypoish to me...silvery/gray with a little bit of a lavender hue.....

Yeah, color is a bit different, but it does explain the hypoish/purple look with dark eyes, unless Kerby's snakes have ruby eyes. lol I don't know, just something to keep in mind.

That is strange, but a good strange. That is a very colorful clutch.

Here is an illustration of the Pink Pearl Ghost Cal King and how when breeding a Lavender to a Ghost some of the babies were already different.

Wow, that's really cool how you put that together like that. The 2012 clutch has even more purplish snakes than the 2011.

Beautiful clutch Kerby!

Disclaimer: I do keep several snakes in pairs, and some in groups. However I realize that things can go wrong, and I have to keep a close eye on those groups, to be sure they are not being adversely affected by these living conditions. Also if one happens to eat it's cagemate, it is 100% my fault, and I know the risks in advance!
