Super glue wonders

joecop Aug 30, 2012 12:58 PM

This little Bass Lake male hatched with a big open hole in this abdomen and had his intestines hanging out. (The cord did not close up properly evidently). I used a small probe and carefully pushed the intestines back into the hole and gently squeezed the opening shut as well as I could. I then used super glue to close the hole shut and held it there for about four or five minutes. Was not a fun process with a scared sh--less hatching trying to get away. Seemed to have worked however as he is doing well and I just gave him his first meal two days ago, which he eagerly took and held down.

Just about totally healed up!!!

Thanks Ross. I actually was VERY concerned because I had promised a buddy a male, and this is the last of my bass lake animals and my only male.(downsizing sucks) The extra effort seemed worth it and I do think he will make it.

Meant to say "you got it".

Joe, That is aw-some vet work. Better than a Vet actually. Wonder if he will shed ok. Hope so. That is using your head. The only thing else I think you could have done is give a couple shots of Batril for infection, but that is tricky, dosing these very small babies. But apparently yours didn't need it. So cool. Thanks Mike!!! Quite the compliment. He seems to be doing well and actually did shed, and had a complete-no issue shed. He passed some feces from yolk stores and I am just waiting to see how the baby skink he ate digests. It was a very small meal and if that passes with no issues I think he is home free. I thought about the batryl, but like you said, a VERY VERY tiny amount would have to be given. I would have done so orally also, but seeing how a 500 gram snake gets .10 of a cc (injection rate), it would be just crazy measuring the amount for this snake. Thanks again bro.

LOL.. Thanks Doug. Just good old fashion street surgery. Used it MANY times on myself instead of forking over the bucks for the ER and stitches. I am sure you would have and could have done the same.

That's fantastic Joe! Glad to see it worked, and it's good info to have also, thanks!

Disclaimer: I do keep several snakes in pairs, and some in groups. However I realize that things can go wrong, and I have to keep a close eye on those groups, to be sure they are not being adversely affected by these living conditions. Also if one happens to eat it's cagemate, it is 100% my fault, and I know the risks in advance!

That is just fantastic Joe!

Has it defecated successfully yet? Being a very small meal and two or more days, it should drop one anytime hopefully..
