How much should a high white be?

lizardman24 Sep 04, 2012 04:17 PM

Hey guys. im planning on going to the whiteplains show this weekend. i would really like to get a high white cali king, and im wondering how expensive i should expect them to be. i have about 90 dollars, and already have a tank and everything. also i was wondering if the high white, aztec and aberrant were the same kind of morph? they kind of all look the same. do any of you guys know the price of any of these morphs at expos? thanks so much guys. hoping for a quick answer

The Aztec has its own look, but it is basically an aberrant kingsnake. Almost all those morphs are considered aberrant, but aberrant is used when a certain Cal king doesn't fall into a certain category (morph). For example, there are high whites with different amounts of dark pattern in the white. Some have a lot and some have a little. When there is a little too much dark pattern, we call those aberrants. Where you draw the line is up to the individual person. I've seen some kings advertised as high white, but I'd call it an aberrant. I like the snake to have at least 90% white to be a high white, others might want to see at least 80% white to be a high white.

A really nice high white might go for a little more than the regular ones, but I think $90 is enough to get just what you are looking for. I see them going for about $60 a lot of times. You can also get high white albinos, which aren't too much more. Now, a real serious high white buyer is going to want to see the parents first and make sure they are both nice and white and not cream colored. Babies often look nice and white, but they can yellow up some as they grow, all depending on how nice the parents are.

ok that sounds good. would aberrants with more black be less expensive? i really like how some of them have a white base and then lots of black spots or squiggles. not as much as pure white but with some pattern you know?

RossPadilla Sep 04, 2012 06:56 PM

Yeah, I know what you're talking about. It all depends on the seller, but I'm pretty sure you'll find what you're looking for for less than $90.

ok thank you. would you happen to know if aberrant snakes with more black than white would cost less?

RossPadilla Sep 04, 2012 08:12 PM

I think generally they are cheaper.

Hi, first there is no SET price, it depends on the seller.

Normally, high dollar morphs will be priced at X price, then all the generic types, at a low price. Often times, you can find wonderful animals in the lower price ranges. Best of luck

" Often times, you can find wonderful animals in the lower price ranges. "

Exactly! Could not have said it better myself.

Great advice. You can see many high white californiae going from 70 to 90. Again it has a lot to do with the breeders of these snakes, what you find to be a great looking snake and what you really want to pay out. Many awesome looking high whites, if you look, will and can be much less.

Now, a real serious high white buyer is going to want to see the parents first and make sure they are both nice and white and not cream

You can also check the underbelly and see if it is white or cream. The white belly ones will stay white as adults.

So make sure you check the underbelly and the sides to see if the white gets more cream or yellow color. i would not consider those that are unless the price is around $40.

thanks guys. im kind of worried about them getting sold out. i really want a nice Aberrant or a high white with lots of black, but i dont know how rare they are at shows. i was planning from buying from bhb reptiles, but they told me they are only bringing 2 or 3. should i get as soon as it opens, or should i not be worried?

DISCERN Sep 05, 2012 08:35 PM

If you go to the show, make a quick trip around the whole show, looking solely for BW Cal kings of your liking. Find one in particular you like but still want to cruise around quick? Put it on the bottom of the deli cup pile, if there is one, keep looking, and then, come back to it.

I have waited a few times at shows, when I was looking for something in particular, and I was glad I did, as I found better specimens later on than the first table I saw, with better prices. Of course, those experiences were just those experiences. You also may find exactly what you are looking for right away.

It is a gamble though, if you find something you like, and don't grab it right away. You may come back and it may be gone!

Don't worry. There are plenty of these at shows. You need to take your time and look at every table. Then go back and compare a couple of the best you have seen. Also check for health issues, dehydration and you can tell if they have been fed at least a few times on pinks. Pick the best eaters and not just the best looking.
If you find one this is exceoptional and it costs a little more. It is worth it to fork out $20-$30 more for something you will keep for a long time...but that does not mean the best looking are the most expensive either. Always get to shows early and do some quick searching (glancing over tables like you are hunting B&W Cal kings only)don't tkae time to look at odities. You will have time to go back later. Shopping around like this will get you the best choice.

There are some nice ones in the KS classifieds that are being sold that are described as the cream of the crop of 80 babies by Brad Chambers? That are exactly that price. I don't want anymore snakes but Discern, being the bad influence he can be, alerted me to them and I am tempted.

White Plains is a very good show with a lot of nice animals. Folks like Mike Russo are there too with very nice stuff and he's also a Forum member here but sometimes I find that between gas for the show, parking ( shouldn't be a problem at WPs) food on the road, admission fee and impulse buy stuff you can be ahead by getting quality animals here by a vendor shipped by SYR.

Although it IS fun to go to a show.

Good luck.

As I've been hemming and hawing about those nice Cal. Kings offered here I did A Google image search and clicked on the nicest pic displayed and low and behold it was taken by DMONG!
