Trading herps; theft prevention...

Snakey Sep 08, 2012 12:57 PM

I just wanted to know what your methods are when trading reptiles are and esp when you are trading an animal that is of significant value.

Do you send first hoping they reciprocate?

Do you have them put a deposit down at which point you send it, then refund their money once they obtain it, then they simply sent theirs?

How do you trade for herps and prevent yourself from being a victim?

Only trade with people with a good reputation so you have to do your homework on them. My rule is who ever suggested the trade first is the one who ships there snake first. Then after receiving the new snake and checking it out good that day you or the other guy ship there snake the following day. If the second guy is happy with the way the second snake looks the deal is done. If not then you both ship each other snake back on the same day or what ever the two of you decide to do. When at all possible I will meet the person some where and swap snakes at the same time. This way you don't have to worry about shipping problems.

Take care
Tom

As Tom already mentioned, check them out online, see if they have a reputation good or bad.

Two other points...

1) Typically it will be the lesser known person shipping first. Of course both could be relatively unknown hobbyists.

2) Trust your "spidey sense" if it does not sound right, if anything does not sound or feel right, walk away!!
