1st Hondo Clutch of the Year!

RG Sep 08, 2012 01:31 PM

I've been focusing on outcrossing the "Mega" line stuff (for the past few years), so this year I paired my Mega Tricolor Het Snow to 4 different unrelated females. Only 3 of the 4 females ended up giving me good eggs.

The sire:

His offspring twin from last year:

So, back to my first Hondo clutch of 2012 (it's also her first clutch ever as well); she's a Ghost (50% Het Amel) that I got from Herby07 a few years ago.

Her Neonate Pic:

Her with the clutch:

I got 7 eggs, but 3 were obviously duds from the start:

Ended up with only 3 fertile eggs, but when they started to hatch I noticed something very interesting...

Yep, all Ghosts! Not exactly what I was expecting, I prefer variety in the clutch if possible, but kinda cool at the same time considering the coin flip odds.

Here are the neonates in order of hatching:

1st out:

2nd out:

3rd out:

My next clutch is due in about a week from today, and my final clutch from the same male is due about 10 days after that...it will be a fun September!

I have another weird story that I will have to post about later...long story short, thought I had an egg bound female, turns out she finally laid eggs after two "pre-lay" sheds, not eating and about 2 months later than expected...I might have a couple fertile eggs, hatching around Thanksgiving!!! I paired her with my unproven Triple Homozygous male...

Cool clutch Rusty. Congrats on all ghosts. I wonder what the odds are.

RG Sep 09, 2012 12:35 PM

Good question Don, not sure but I think the outcomes are all independent, so it's a 50% chance for each neonate to be a Ghost.

Someone correct me if I'm incorrect?

Either way, it's interesting odds!

Very nice Ghosts, Rusty. Too bad about the duds. Looking forward to the rest. By the way, my light one has eaten. Congrats, and thanks for sharing your results.

Thanks Dennis; it's nice to get those nates eating!!!

It's always stressful until they do...I'm already looking forward to this Friday, can't wait for the next clutch!

Rusty, the offspring twin looks redder than the dad. True?
The ghost neonate-and-now is a classic display of how the tipping comes in.
I like the "first out" baby--very hypo-ish/extreme-ish, and very nice pink. Keep 'em coming!

RG Sep 09, 2012 12:47 PM

Yep, you are correct Terry. His offspring is more red and a little more yellow too. I didn't really notice those slight differences until you pointed it out...it's amazing how much Hondos change with age. Some change so much, you could hardly recognize them as an adult!

I always try to get neonate pics, sub-adult and adult pics for my records...it might prove useful one day in the future.

I think that first one is the lightest one of the clutch, the last one has the nicest uniform banding and the middle one seems to be the biggest. I'll post a group shot of them once they eat and I get them sexed.

You don't have to miss them forever Terry!

Sweet looking ghost's there Rusty!

Was the bad one this one on the right with the yellowish discoloration on the end?

Hey Doug,

Actually, no...the three "good" eggs were all together, as seen on the right side of that pic.

The one "good looking egg" on the left turned out to be unfertilized.

Weird how they can look that good and NOT be fertile!

It was the Ghost's first clutch, so it wasn't a total loss!

Yeah, it's weird how that works sometimes. You can just NEVER tell by looks alone. I have some yellow-tipped eggs that should be fine right now as well...

is hatching now!

The nates look really nice, but I don't think they are what would be classified as "extremes".

Once they are all out, I'll do another post!
