new to my collection!!

kingsnakeadam Sep 10, 2012 08:59 PM

Hey everyone, I just wanted to share some pics of some new locality kings I got recently. First are a pair of long beach hyper grease kings. I will be selectively breeding these darker and dark until patternless... to my knowledge it hasn't been done with this locality yet. All of these kings are coastal faze cal kings.

The male

The female

And this pair both are het for striped mud morph. The male is a Newport scrambled banded het for striped mud. The female is a normal banded het for striped mud morph.

The male I really like his pattern

The female I like her tear drops

Adam, those pictures certainly do not do those snakes justice. LOL Just messin with you. They are are awesome. You can tell how that female Grease king is noticeably brown. I think she is going to brown out like my female. From my experience, the brown ones are not nearly as common as the really dark brown almost black ones. Only 2 out of the 9 in that clutch were brown.

The Scrambled banded het is really cool too. That's the first Scrambled banded I've seen with bands that strait. From above it looks like a normal banded king until you notice the Newport tail. It will be very interesting to see if we can produce a king expressing Newport and Striped Mud at the same time. Good luck with them.

Here's your Scrambled banded right after it came out of the egg. You can see the tip of the tail still in the egg.

Hey, no problem at all, Adam. I went down to the Grease king field that day and they now have it completely fenced up on both sides. They are getting ready to do something in there and even had one of the streets closed next to it. I heard they were going to turn that place into a sports park, so maybe that's whats coming soon. Whenever that place goes, these kings will be that much more special.

Makes me wonder what happened to all of the Elfin Forest Blue Eyed Blondes. Who's still working with them?

I haven't seen them anywhere, not even in the classifieds. Maybe at a reptile expo.

If you are referring to VIVID's Blue-Eyed Blondes.....I'm down to one skinny female.

I bought a pair about 10 years ago. They came in skinny and would not feed as babies. Finally got them to feed. If fed anything too big or feed them too often then they would regurge. I did breed the male to another cal king, thus getting hets but they were all males. I should have kept one, but I sold them at the time because of my heart surgeries. I finally put the male down. The female is still alive but skinny. I bred her this year to a Casper (albino Ghost) cal king but she laid bad eggs. Trying to get some weight on her.

Live and learn......

Vivid sure did a great job making them look like an amazing morph. I just wonder now if this is why they seem to be disappearing.

Back in 05 I had an awesome, huge male that would eat great.....
I've never heard of anything wrong with them or their feeding habits until now.

I hated loosing him (and the others)....
I wonder who else is still working with them...

They are very unique, IMO, John.

And from a habitat that is no long there...similar to the LA Grease Kings' future.....

That's good to hear, because I'd like to work with that morph one day. Maybe Kerby needs to read some care sheets on keeping and breeding Cal kings.

In fact when I got them as babies, VIVID said "don't expect them to feed until January"....he said: "that is natural for Cal King babies"....except they were so darn skinny when I got them...sure, it wasn't my first rodeo. $175 each at the time....

Both of mine were banded.

Weird....Sounds natural for all of the thayeri they produce but not for California Kings. The Cali Kings I've produced have been way better hatchling feeders than all of my mexicana.

Out of all the maybe 10 or so babies I've found and collected after August, only one refused to eat right away. Sounds like they were problem feeders for Vivid from the very beginning.

Oh, I know I got screwed. I was just trying to save them. Oh well.

I would love to get the BEB line into some other morphs but will have to try again next year.

There are 9 banded normal looking males that are het for BEB out there somewhere LOL

You did the right thing in trying to save them. I'm surprised they turned out to be a problem for the rest of their lives.

Grease kings are probably my favorite locality morph of getula californiae. Good luck with your project...the darker the better! You will be getting an email from me in the future when you have neos available!

DISCERN Sep 10, 2012 11:37 PM

Congrats! Those are very nice, my friend!
