Female panthers laying too many eggs!

tessai Oct 06, 2003 07:35 AM

I read that panthers can lay 4-6 cluthes per year but ideally they should only lay 2-3 for health reasons. I want my pets in the best health possible so I opted to only breed them 2 times a year.

I have ambanja females that have both laid 2 clutches 6 weeks apart. Both have only been bred once. I have confirmed that the the second batch of eggs are infertile as they went bad in just over 1 week. 6 weeks seems like a very short time to lay 2 clutches of eggs. both females are in good health and eat 12-15 crickets or a combo of 6 crickets and 4 silk worms.

My question is, if they are going to lay those eggs anyways, shouldnt I just have her breed to get them fertile? If the actualy laying process is what is so health draining, Is it safe to assume that breeding her wont have much affect?

Please let me know if you guys have experienced this. thanks

the amount of food being fed has a direct inpact of the amount/frequency of eggs being laid. You are feeding a lot for adults anyway try cutting back to six crix a day and see what happens? or even 8. you will find that you will be getting eggs less often.
hope this helps

It is normal for panther females to lay a 2nd clutch after 6 weeks. Usually less of them are fertile than in the first clutch, but some still should be. For a good story, read whatever I write later tonight, because I'm in the middle of a weird female panther situation that we will all learn from. I just don't have the answer to what happens quite yet... Also, if you breed your female panther between the 1st and second clutch, yes, it will get the eggs fertile, but she will want to lay again after that. Get it? So from each mating, they will lay 2 clutches. If you keep breeding her every 3rd week after laying, she will keep laying fertile eggs, and after 3 or 4 she'll die..... That's why you gotta mate them, let them lay 2 clutches (6 weeks apart) then give her a few months off.
